Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Welllll, I was really having issues getting the range finder armored covers right.....so I went to the dollar store...Picked up a 1/18 scale cow and some beeds....

Now what colour beed for this tank....

Its been really challanging....so it gets the pink beeds.....so it can be a pretty tank.
now its time to place the turret hatches....more reused hl parts

and the beeds in place...

and its time to start thinking about making this a roller.....I am going to keep the battery box in place to help with keeping the hull ridgid.....

but I hate to roll the tank over to change the battery so I open it up....

time for some mato 3:1 gear boxes and some 400 motors from phil

and with that, she is a roller.....Yea!

One thing is for sure, I am not going to run into another of these on the battle field

i doubt your gonna get another one of these turn up on the day buddy iimpressed how longit took you
Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Ok time to post some more build pics.....well, since the hull gunner is gone, time to deleat the hatch and parascope....

Now, I have really been thinking about the turret, the king tiger turret had 4 major peaces on the sides, 3 top peaces and a bottom peace....thats 8 peaces with 2 presion bent peaces( the sides)....my turret design has 4 sides, one top and on bottomfor 6 peaces , all of them just burned out of flat stock....the big proble with my design is the 8 inch think front plate would weigh close to 5 tones by my best guess...the flat turret top would also limit forward view from the comanders loaction...in short, its a mess....here is my new design...6 sides, 2 top and one bottom..thats 8 peaces all flat.

I scaled the thinkness for 8 inch for the front, 5 inch for the front sides, 4 inch for the rear sides and the rear plate......The king tiger has 80mm sides on the turret.....

while all that stuff was sitting..time to fix the gunners hatch.....some box staples and I have hinges

Time to do some more scale work on the rear hull and to add the inserts...

now for some welding and some primer...

next is the rear deck.....

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Very creative, the hatch hinges look great good idea to use the staples. The commanders copula does seem very far back at this point, watching with interest.

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
The comanders hatch was moved back because I shortened the whole turret from both the front and the rear.....look at the hatches here....

and here

My thought that the tank would have been used in night fighting so the gunner would have been moved back to make room for the IR sight equipment. I have made the turret different from on side to the other because the gunner would be moved back while the loader would have been in the same loacation to service the gun. The gunner being moved back would have ment the comander would have been moved back as well.....

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Ok, time for another post of progress.....they say the devil is in the details and I have been having a devil of a time....
If you remember I got rid if the hull gunner( staffing problems and such)....i cut off the hull gunner's parascope, cut out a round peace of card, stick a screw through it. and mounter the hullgunners gaurd on it and made a turnable loaders parascope....

and then I put in a parascope....

Next I converted the comanders hatch....to a simple swing hatch and added parascopes

next was the rear deck access hatch.....

after that it was time to make the apple mount, I wanted to make it turnable for different events...

detailed the tail pipes...

and added late kt fuel tank breather lines....

vent shields....

Tine for the rear excape hatch....

Yes it works......till next time....later

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Time for another update.....well the e50 was bitten by the fassion bug, seems all the king tigers are going skirtless so she insisted on showing her wheels...slut

if there are any kids out there, you might want to look away.....

and finally some plastic card strips and a drill and the look is complete......

next more rear deck work.......

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build
Got some more work done on the beast.....added the Shrapnel shields to the rear deck and did more work on the motor access doors...

started mounting the spare track holders....that also adds extra armor....

went with making my own panther style gun cleaning rod holders......

here the turret put together and the new front fenders....

and the base coat of German olive green.......with black put on first to accent some details...

and the cleaning rod holder on the rear deck....

and the air brush got clogged as I was setting it up for next paint shoot....I then snapped off the little needle sleeve cleaning it.....so its time for another 30 dollar duel action air brush..... I should get it done this next weekend.

Re: Converting a HL king tiger into a e50 build 6/3 update
Some of you may not have spent the time to read this, but its worth the time if you are interested in understanding german tanks and how they were built....
All these interlocking armor plates were cut out with torches, It is important that seams that will be welded are smooth but there is no real reason aside from looks to grind smooth end seams. These hours would have been better used on working on more weld seams. From what I understand, the floor/ torsion bar holders were the most time intensive part of building the later german tanks, the e50 was to fix that with the boggie system that was to be used ( see the first page of this thread). The next big time eater was cutting and cleaning up the armor plates, My thought is they would have looked at that and addressed that next, thus the unground end plates of the armor. I also tried to get rid of any bent armor, aside from the bit by the comanders hatch, everything is flat on this tank. There are also no stepped seams like the front of the kt turret as these are hard to produce....Tonight I hope to get the electronics into the tank.....unless I get hammered with the hunnydolist......
