Heng long tiger help.

Post by bikerdude »

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this, as the help section says its for simple queries and what I need is a complete walk through of a heng long tiger...

Basically someone I work with has given me a heng long tiger, that they bought a few years ago for £80 off someone who told them the motors had burned out. He never did anything with it and is I've got it. With it came a box with 2 spare circuit boards in.

I've taken the top off the tank and wired the motors up directly to a battery, and both run, so they've not burned out. But 1 of the motors 'pulses' I disconnected it from the gearbox (the gearboxes are the metal 1's) and turned the gearbox by hand, and you can turn the drive wheel about 3 times and then the gearbox locks up and you have to force it past that point using a screwdriver, so I assume something is bent or got something stuck on it, though I cant see anything. Is it worth trying to take the gearbox apart (if they come apart?) or just replace it?

Also how do the drive wheels fit? As the 1 on the dodgy gearbox is loose and moves quarter of a turn before moving the gearbox?

Next thing is, every picture ive seen of replacement motors and (what I assume is) the control board, the motors are fitted with plugs the plug into the circuit board, but the wires on mine are soldered to the board?

The other problem is that it hasn't got a transmitter, so I need to try and get 1 of those, but money is a bit tight this month, so I can't see what else is working (or not).

Hopefully attached is a picture of the inside, I have no idea what's what, or what supposed to be there so im not sure if there is anything missing?

This is a pic of the tank with he top on, couldn't seem to get it to attach in full like the other 1.

Sorry for such a long 1st post, but I really have no idea where to start with this!

Ps. Do I have to use the standard heng long transmitter or is it possible to use a planet t5 or similar? Thanks.

hi mate Im not to hot on electronics but your Tiger looks like the early smoke and sound version . The circuit board is a RX13 or 14 (some one might correct that ) the newer ones , probably what you have seen with plug in connection's are the RX18 boards . As for controllers I think you might be better of with a Heng Long one but get the smoke and sound controller not the basic one.

The drive sprockets are usually fixed on with a screw just gently pop of the cetre piece of the drive sprocket and you will see what's holding it on .Be careful tho not to damage it as how easy this will be depends on what we call the Heng Long glue monkey (the guy who glues the tanks together  )

Spare parts for Heng Long tanks are not expensive plus I'm sure people on here will help you out

Sorry its a bit vague , been a while since I have worked on my Heng Long Tiger.

Hi There,

Looking at your photo the right side motor spindle looks a little bent to me, or it maybe the photo. Does it spin true?
Possible buckled spindle due to pinion change?!

Not sure, but I don't think you can. You would have to change the receiver board inside the tank.

The main board is the RX13 with all soldered connections, if you have to change anything its easier to cut the wires to give you something to connect back to rather than trying to unsolder and solder connections direct to the board, the smaller board is the receiver and has the crystal plugged into the bottom, you need a compatible crystal (same number) in your transmitter.
The gear box can be removed and stripped down to look for the fault, three screws hold it down then 4 screws hold it together, two on the bottom and two cross tubes. The motors can also be separated from the gearboxes, holes in one side allow you to get a screwdriver through to undo the motor screws. You will need to take the drive sprockets off to take the gear boxes out so you can check how that's fixed at the same time.

Hi there,

Looking at the right motor in the picture i think se7en is right the third drive gear looks out of true. It my be that the shaft is bent or the bearings at either end are worn and causing the gear to bind. Move the drive sprocket back and fourth and see if anything is moving sideways.

Thanks, I'll have a proper look on my next days off, but I fear if I dismantle the gearbox, it will probably never go back together (properly) again...

1 more question, with the talk of various 'boards', RX18, RX14 etc will a transmitter from any smoke and sound model work, or do you need a specific corresponding transmitter to work with each different board?

Oh and there was no battery with this, so what voltage do they run? 7.2V? I hope so, then I can just use a stick pack from my model boats.

Any HL smoke and sound transmitter should do but you will have to get a matching pair of crystals as well.

Might be worth considering upgrading the control boards,

or replacing the lot like this,

Batteries are 7.2V and there are many different brands available, just remember, the more milli amp hours (mAh) the longer the tank will run for

Thanks, I'll have a look at all those links later, doing it on as small a budget as possible at the momen though, so only looking at neccisary fixes rather than upgrades.

Glad it's 7.2V, means I can use the same battery I use in my boat, it's 5000mAh so should keep the tank running a long while!
