Tamiya M4 Sherman buying advice

Post by Kris308 »

Hi,

I am looking at buying my first 1/16 Tamiya Sherman and am after advice from people on the best place to buy one from?. I have already built a Heng Long Tiger 1 and had that from Tankzone. I have been advised however that this is not the best place to buy from and have been told that this site isn't very popular with modellers on this forum. I am looking to convert the 105mm Tamiya Sherman to a 76mm version and want to model it on Oddballs tank from the film Kelleys Heroes. I also want to purchase as many upgrade/metal parts as possible.
Many thanks, your advice will be much appreciated.

The big problem with the Tamiya tank if you want to model 'Oddballs' tank from 'Kellys Heroes' is the suspension which is the later HVSS as opposed to the V V S suspension as depicted on the tank in the film.
Also the tank even for that price is quite a disappointment considering it is from Tamiya, the engineering of the suspension is excellent but the rest of the hull will need a lot of work. Apart from the commanders cupola nothing opens and there are a lot of inaccuracies. Hope this helps

I have to say I have bought a lot of stuff from Tankzone over the last 12 months and had no problems, maybe the bad news is old news? :eh:

I have never used Tankzone as Ive always managed to get it elsewhere a lot cheaper . But that's my view . I wont give them bad press because I haven't used them.

Hi kris,
I have used Tankzone on many occasions (not for kits though) and have always had pretty good service from them. If the price is better than elswhere in UK then I would go for it. You can get cheaper in Hong Kong or US but its not worth it once you add duty and shipping.
BTW I did this convert a year or so ago and apart from the suspension(which I intend to do at a later date) I think I made a pretty good replica of Oddballs sherman. As said in other replies, there is a lot of alteration to do on the hull and turret but you can buy some parts to help.
Have a look at my build log:

it may give you some ideas, and if you want any question answered, feel free to pm me.
