Why simulate when you dont have to?

Pick a place where rust would be or would run. If it is on a flat surface take a tiny bit of 0000 steel wool and place on the location.If you want the rust to appear to be running then loop a bit of threat around one end of a tiny bit of 0000 steel wool and hang in in the area you want rusted.

Nex mix 1 part white vinager and 1 part water. Apply the mixture to the steel wool, being careful to not overdo it. Then let it sit for about 12 hours.

You will see a nice rust stain. A bit more mixture on the wool that is hangingwill cause a slight run which will result in a rust streak. If it is too heavy, use an old stiff brush to fade it out. Then seal it and look at that amazingreal rust.

An aside i know, but Vinegar, used neat is an excellent cleaner for rusty Petrol tanks too. Use the cheapest you can find at your local supermarket, fill the tank & leave 24 hrs. I was quite amazed to see how well it works.

I’ve always been a believer in the real thing wherever possible, rust being one of them.
I have various items in old coffee jars, small steel nails, swarf from my lathe etc and of course steel wool fermenting away. Usually I let it dissolve and dry completely to form a rust powder before use.
Living near the sea I use seawater.
Thanks for the Vinegar tip, not tried it but will now.

ok i got the bit how to make rust.how do you seal it on the tank from stopping it coming of ?
