Should I resurrect a king ?

I got my hands on an early king tiger. not sure how old it is. it is equipped with a futaba FP-T4L radio. old nicads , and the motor and speed control seem to be burnt out. I tested the motor out side the tank and it almost turns on its own. I have not fooled with rc stuff since the 80's and am not familiar with all the new stuff. I would like to replace the motor, batterries, and speed control with modern stuff butt dont know what will be compatible. or if this thing is even worth messing with. any help or sugestions will be appreciated

Although I havent done this mod myself, if its an early Tam KT, a cost effective way of getting it up and running would be to fit The RX18 HL electrics and a set of asitam motors. If your Tam motors are ok, you could still keep them. Pm Saxondog, he has a few Tam KTs and he would be only too pleased to help.

Tiger? or King Tiger? This really matters, it seems you have a very old tank,yet it can be converted and upgraded to a twin drive system.

I am certain that this is a king tiger from all the pics i have looked at . I will get some pics posted this evening. i'm using my girl friends pc and am not sure how to upload them .

Then it is the 56004 version most likely,the newer versions have a separate motor and gearbox for each side. Converting to this type of drive would be better. The older drive uses a servo to engage the power to the tracks.

We can certainly help you to convert to a newer drive system,or repair the system you have. Honestly though converting to dual drive would be best,scrap the Tamiya electronics for now and use the far less costly Chinese system.

Check out the two links,they will give you some idea of the newer versions differences,the first link has all the tanks listed,if you click on the first King Tiger a menu option of Manul will be above the picture,this will open the manual and allow you to see the dual drive version.

King Tiger lower hull with dual drive system. Scott this is a better system, You could use Tamiya DMD unit,or with this system of drive a Heng Long RX18 could power your tank,also the gun elevation and Turret rotation could be made to work.All for under much less than the Tamiya system.

Really you need to decide what you want to do,if the goal is driving the tank,and having the other functions fine no problem.But if you want it to operate as designed,excluding the drive system that is much more work.
