The metal gearboxes can be disappointing as they are made from poor quality metal. I have had a set that were so badly cast they would not even mesh properly on one side. Got a set of Tamiya motors and gearboxes from Jason's Store for my King Tiger and they are excellent.
The Rx 18 board is good value for money compared with the Tamiya DMD.

Yep he's rite the tamiya gears are the best! But they are still not low enough geared! You can buy a gear kit for them but at a cost of £60!!! On top of the £50 it would cost to get the tamiya gear boxes!! But still the tamiya gearboxes are the best ! And I'll be changing my tiger to them in the near future! The cheaper option is a set of low ration 3/1 gearboxes from forgebear tge output shafts are ballraced and they are heavy !! But do the and the tank moves at a more realistic speed!! With lots of torque

Re: is this good or bad??
At the meet there will be plenty tanks for you to check out and decide which way you want to go!!! I've been looking at the SLU battle system!! It's tamiya compatable!! And replaces all the radio gear in the tank!! Except the turret motor gun elevation recoil motor and smoker lol but it allows you to use a proper hand set and reciver! You can even get a 2.4ghz hand set so you don't have to worry about wave bands!! Plus it has greet sounds and at £130 plus the price of a good hand set it's the best way to change to a tamiya battle system!!! Plus no track recoil or super spin!!
Plus forgebear can get them!!!!971wright has one fitted in a tank pluse another with an elmod system and I think he's even got a tamiya one as well and he's bringing them to the meet!!!

You should have RX18 in there. Looks like a small black box about 60mm x 40mm with plug in wires round most of the sides.

Regarding the gearboxes.

You'll need a spare set of gearboxes to use a parts from.
If you haven't got a spare gearbox probably better to buy low ratio gearbox.
I have Asiatam 3:1 and find this is good for torque and speed although the gearbox is basically same as the HL metal one (even the cogs look same poor quality!) so is very noisy. Also got a Mato 4:1 with brass gears I had a lot of problems with these, bent drive shaft, gears seizing on shafts, had to change motors and even now I have all that sorted I still have the grub screws working loose on the drive shaft! The Mato is quieter than the Asiatam but find the torque lower and speed higher.
If you can wait until the tank meet you'll get to see/hear them in action so might help your decision.

cheapest solution get a set of black metal gearboxes from forgebear much more of an improvement

Re: is this good or bad??
Steve @ Welshdragon has a nice selection of upgrades for the H/L KT also gearboxes which I have posted. My Asiatam boxes in my Tiger are over two years old and have had the hell run out of them,no problems.

Re: is this good or bad??
cheers guys, the rx18 looks the same as i have, and by the sounds of it i'm better getting the 3:1 gearboxes from steve than wasting time trying to mess around with mine. and i'll see the guys and gals, and tanks at the meet and pick brains.
