Post by Odd ball »

Hi,
ive had a quick search of the forums but cant seam to find a paint guide fort spraying the tanks(Tiger1 and M41), i'm hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction from preping the tank with a rub down, primer to finishing and what pains to use for a primer and finish.

Hi jamie

first step as you say is the primer this is best from halfords either there grey or red primer
just make sure it's acrylic (will tell you on the tin ;) )

next the top coat depends on what your skill level is ie novice or pretty handy and have an airbrush?

i would recommend the tamiya or humbrol rattle cans usually about £5-8 from most hobby/model shops or e-bay

if you use the acrylics and enamels make sure you let each coat dry as there is a reaction between the two if you dont
some guys add a varnish coat between top coat and any camo coats after that
hope that helps you some

Cheers for that, roughly how many cans are required for primer and finish coat, would one primer and two for top coat do?

the primer cans come in a large size @ 500ml so one of these should be enough

if you use tamiya paints they are only 100mls so about 2-3 for a top coat and one each for the different camo patterns of your choice heres a link to the tamiya paint charts http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/spray.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Their is a complete guide on this forum under painting and Weathering. Also I'm painting two tank just now and can send photo.s. The Rustoleum rusty metal primer works well,but light coats as it is rather thick,and let it dry at least 24hrs. I also use a hair dryer to heat the primer before spraying the base coat to ensure all the oil base of the primer is dried.

http://www.rctankwarfare.co.uk/forums/v ... .php?f=151" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This is a sub-board attached to Tips and Tricks. Their is alot of information and many ways to paint,can,brush,air brush.

I have used several methods and am still learning more. If you require some help their are several guys here that are excellent at painting and weathering. Also many good sites posted in the link.

The first painting guide,some picture are missing due to the old forum crashing,still over 9000 views and some specific information. Oz teaching me and Steiner the fine art of painting. Both OZ and Steiner carried their tanks to the highest level of detailing. Both can be viewed in the MASTERCLASS Section.

http://www.rctankwarfare.co.uk/forums/v ... .php?f=151" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; also Steiner just sent this excellent guide to the use of Future shine floor polish and Tamiya Flat base as a sealer and finish much better than DULLCOAT.

http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I will weather permitting be using this method tomorrow on my Henschel King Tiger build posted in the Tamiya build section.I have been waiting to apply this finish to the camo paintwork for some time.

I will post a link here to the build thread where the changes this process effects can be viewed,perhaps oddball this will benefit you as well,I will spray the mixture with an airbrush,and will use a paintbrush on the lower hull back plate to demonstrate the difference if any between the two application methods.

If you use spray paint on your tank,then brush coat the Matte Finish this will give you and idea of the process and the result,hopefully this information will be of use. cheers Blake
