Torro 1/16 King Tiger build

Post by jukebox »

Hi all, I have been collecting the parts to build this for a while now and thought it was about time to start putting it together. The majority of the parts were bought from Kin at Tankzone, it's the infra-red version and I am going to be using an RX18 setup for the electronics to maintain compatability with my other tanks. I am planning on building it as tank 111 of 1 Komp. s.Heeres Pz. Abt. 424, using the Peddinghaus decal set and colour scheme.

First step was to fit the electronics to the plastic base, this has been designed with the RX18 setup in mind. I am also using an anti-tracks recoil unit from RCTank.de, control wiring for this has been soldered directly to the underside of the RX18 board as have the power leads for the cooling fan I have fitted on top of the RX18 (after removing most of the top cover!). A HL proportional smoke unit is fitted, all the screw holes lined up nicely, ditto for the standard HL speaker. I still have to connect up the anti-track recoil unit wiring to the motors and add a power feed for the main gun recoil unit.

The metal 3:1 gearboxes also went straight in, all the holes lined up spot on.

Next on went the road wheels and the rear idlers. The road wheels all fitted no problem, really pleased with the level of detail on these.

I also had to free off the idler axle and I had to shorten the axles as they were fouling on the hull, after that they fitted ok.

So far it is going together well, the quality and fit of the parts is really good and should result in a hefty beast which should handle some abuse!

A little bit of progress, fitted the drive sprockets and tracks, now drivable! Took it for a spin around the lounge, nice deep track marks in the carpet, the lower hull with wheels and tracks weighs in at 5.7 kgs! One thing to note, the drive sprockets on the Tankzone site do not fit this hull, they have a large cone on the inner face of the sprocket which fouls on the metal transmission casing preventing the sprocket from fitting. The solution is to fit the metal sprockets recently produced for the HL Porsche King Tiger (bought mine from Welshdragon), these have a different shape on the inner face to clear the transmission cover on the HL Porsche King Tiger and fit the Torro hull a treat.

The idler, road wheel and drive sprocket alignment was spot on, no spacers needed any where, and the tracks run dead straight.

please don't take this the wrong way.....That tank is not going to be a fighter....to f-ing heavy without the right motors...you need some 400 moters and some 3 to 1 gear boxes...I would love to get a turret Henchel for my hl kingtiger...that would be cool.

I think he's got the 3/1 gearbox, check out the third photo in the first post. My Tiger has the Asiatam 3/1 and Gruapner speed 400,they are a great combination.

Interesting information about the drive sprockets,I'm sure that will benefit others. Seems your on the way to 10kg or more.Curious about the unit you have chosen, was that due to the limited decal sets?

Their is an option, soon custom sets will be offered on the forum. If that is of interest to you I will keep you updated?

Would like to see the turret assembly,is the turret base metal as well? Which type of recoil unit have you used? Thanks for sharing,Saxondog

Hi chaps, thanks for the interest in this tank. Well it's in one piece now, current weight is 7.4 kgs, so a little bit to go yet before it hits 10 kgs. Blake is correct, the gearboxes are Asiatam 3/1 units made specifically for this hull, I don't know what the motors are, they are supposed to be high torque units. It performs well on carpet, no problem with neutral turns or quick tight turns, although I haven't had it climbing anything yet. I haven't ventured outside with it yet, my garden is too flat now and haven't had the time to find anything challenging to throw it at.
The choice of unit was down to decal set availability, although I do like the colour scheme Peddinghaus give for that vehicle, but the option of custom decal sets sounds interesting!. As for the turret base, this is plastic and the recoil unit came already fitted, looks like an Asiatam unit to me, I'll find out more when I pull it apart to find out why it isn't working! I'll take more interior photos when I strip it.

I'll post some detail photos soon, they have done a pretty good job on this when comparing it to the Trojca 1/16th set of drawings, although I can understand why the metal turret and lower hull front plate don't have zimmerit but why no zimmerit on the plastic hull rear when the upper hull has it??

Regards

Here's a load of close-up photos, all pretty self explanatory. Torro have done a real good job on the details  , the only obvious one missing is no pistol port on the turret rear door, although they put all the interior detail on, even down to the two handles hidden underneath the plate! Rctank.de have a metal pistol port with chain on their site, one is now on its way from Germany. The block for the commander's guide sight on the turret top is there, just needs a rod fitting, and there are two overflow pipes at the rear of the engine deck which need a piece of tube added to each to go over the side of the hull. Putting my anorak on 8| I have only seen one photograph showing a Tiger II with two overflow pipes on the engine deck, this is in the Osprey New Vanguard book number 1, Kingtiger Heavy Tank, page 12, all other pictures and drawings I have seen have one overflow only at the right rear of the engine deck.
The plastic tow ropes and track cable will get changed eventually and a Schumo anti-aircraft MG will probably find its way to the commanders cupola.
