The most well know epic sea adventure of the Kreigsmarine in World war II would be the DMK Bismarck and her eventual destruction, but her companion on her breakout, and Battle with the HMS HOOD and HMS Prince of Wales was the 8" gun Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen.
Always considered a Lucky ship after her escape from the British Fleet, she was often IN DANGER yet survived the war Intact and surrendered in a Swedish port to prevent falling into Russian hands, her Guns were used to great effect in the last Baltic coast battles and a transport for Germans Fleeing the Russian army.
Prinz Eugen was taken to the United States as a war prize, then through the Panama Canal and on to Pearl Harbour, although she was not the first German Heavy Cruiser to make it to the Pacific, the Honour went to the Admiral Scheer during the war.
But fate would have her once again in the news,as she was to survived both atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll island in the remote south pacific, eventually she was towed to kwajalein where she capsized at anchor. She remain their today,in plain view under the shallow lagoons clear waters.

Hi Sax,
What an interesting potted history of the ship and photo of her with her propellor standing proud out of the water. I wonder if she was upright how much of the superstructure is in-tact?
