Elmod IR - How high does it need to be?

Post by wibblywobbly »

I have installed an Elmod IR system in my Tiger, but as the Thinktank board is back at Elmod for testing I can't try it out. The sensor tower is mounted on standoffs that I have attached to the base of the turret, with a hole cut through the bb loading shute.

Currently the height of the IR unit places the sensors just about level with the top of the cupola, but I am wondering if they should be completely above the cupola as per Tamiya units etc.

Is there a 'required' height that ensures the IR unit functions correctly?

Also, I am seeing a lot of comments about sunlight etc? Do I need to screen this unit off, or are the filters that are built into the unit sufficient for the task? ( I also wish Elmod had actually encased the top of the unit - it would look a lot neater!)

I can alter the height of the unit very easily as I am using Maplins screw together jobbies.

Cheers

Hi Rob We are not as fussy as our American pals we dont have rules to say how much it must be above the turret ,as long as it takes hits from all sides its good enough for us .I and Chris have hidden the battle units in the tank, Chris (Grompix)has done this in differant ways inside the tank commander and inside the cupola here is a photo of mine .

As long as you think that this set will work ok that's great. Thanks for that. Now I am curious...what is the pc connector in your hatch?  ??? Charging circuit  ???

Hi Rob

Pete is right. You don't need to have the CSI mushroom very high. I first mounted mine level with the cupola vision slots in my Pz III and left a narrow gap all round (see first two pics).
That worked pretty well but you couldn't see the LEDs flash at any distance, so I've since modified it by putting a sensor behind each vision slot and the LEDs around the rim of the cupola (last two pics).

We're not bothered about the positioning of the sensors so long as the tank can take hits from any angle.

Cheers
Chris ;D
