Alternative smoker units

Post by Tankbear »

Is there any decent aftermarket smoke units. Seen the one on RCtankwars website but is there others?

Also has anyone tried adding something to the smoke oil to produce coloured smoke? i.e. black like diesel smoke.

Hi Tankbear, :~
To my knowledge the very best smoker that you can buy is the one that you mention at RC Tank Wars. It does NOT use the Ni-Chrome wire that is one of the many faults with the Heng Long standard unit and it uses a small silent fan to push out clouds of smoke compared to asthmatic and noisey pump one that the tanks come with. The only other smokers that I am aware of are for the RC Boat enthusiasts, but the units that they use are taller and larger and some only run on 12 or 24 Volts.
I think that 'Cornwall Model Boats' sell smokers and they certainly do a good price on more powerful GRAUPNER Electric Motors for the tanks !!
As far as Tanks go the best unit is the one that you have looked at,AND it comes with proportional control so the faster your engine turns the more smoke is produced.

Thanks Dietrich,

Don't Tamiya tanks etc have decent smokers then?

Plus is there anything special about the oil used? read somewhere baby oil works great, but not knowing the internal workings don't know if this will break it.

Tamiya don't make a specific smoker for their tanks, There's not enough room in them. They devote more space for a speaker box that gives better quality sound, but you can sstrip out the box to make room. I have the Super smoker from RC Tank Wars in my Sherman (its probably the smallest Tam tank) and agree with Dietrich, its the best smoker out there.

This looks like the same thing I've got on my fish pond.
Works by very fast vibration of metal plates just below water level and produces a mist/fog.
Problem with this unit for most of us would be the 12V operation. Also, although its obviously sealed, you have to have a tank of water, when moving up or down a steep slope the water level may drop below the required level and prevent correct operation , (this is just my opinion by the way)

Hi Delboy,
I looked at something like the 'Benedini' system a while ago BUT it looks a bit unreliable with the water sloshing about all over the place as the tank moves over rough ground and obstacles....AND....have you looked at the circuitboard that is required to control it, ..... on page 3 under the banner 4 CONTROLLER CONNECTIONS...... 8O ....That HAS to be EXPENSIVE.
Go with the one from RC TANK WARS....it is proven, reliable it uses a Fog Effect fluid that it heats up and vapourises and at least 3 members on the Forum have them including me and they are BRILLIANT ! :D

Hi Delboy,
I just 'Googled'....... Benedini de .........and the price of the 'Water' Smoker kit is 149 EUROs .......and the 'Oil' Smoker is 189 EUROS !!!.....The electronics look horribly complicated and more complex than the RX-18 Receiver :haha: ................. Here is the link if anyone wants to see them.....

Its only my opinion but, TOO Expensive, TOO Complicated and you still have to build a part of it yourself with all the warnings from them about not blocking pipes or allowing condensation etc.
