What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
hello guys,
I have got the asiatam hull for a tiger 1. I have fitted my gearboxs and now I want to get the tracks on but I only have the plastic idlers from a normal HL tank. These dont seem to fit. Do I need to buy some metal idlers from somewhere?
I am using an early mato wheel set which has been adapted to fit.
Need advice as I am stuck now!
Cheers guys
Mark

Re: What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
I did similar recently, there are some metal and plastic ones that fit the smaller axle, maybe ask forgebear if he has any? I just filled the inside of idler with Squadron putty and drilled holes to fit shafts when dry. Seems to work as a temporary solution but I hope to buy some metal ones as soon as I see them.
Hope this helps, Dave

The Asiatam hull track adjusters use 4mm axles ( mine came included ), H/L ones are plastic with 5mm brass bushes , you can try fitting ball bearings , 10mm x 4mm x 4mm ( 2 per axle would be good but a longer axle is needed
) and this modification costs nearly as much as a pair of metal idlers anyway
- I just got the Asiatam metal idler wheels . ( 4mm bore ) .

Re: What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
I purchased my Asiatam Tiger Hull from Steve Two years ago, their were issues with the axles but the tensioner were part of the hull assembly, they required adjustment but were installed. Perhaps yours were left off,I don't know but the first generation also required softer tension springs although I chose to add weight,at 20lbs my Tiger has been a great runner.
I would contact steve he will know what to do if you purchased from him.
Here are some pictures of the internal part, sorry guys sick today got soaked in the rain storm and just feel dead. I do recal the shafts came in a package taped inside the hull, but I did order tracks and sprockets with the hull, and the Asiatam gearboxes but the early wheels were to much moneymand not available yet so OZ sent me this set from his WSN Tiger,i made the axles and trhe rest is history. Never have I had any track problem, don't know how many Hours but enough to kill the first battery 3300 and on the second now.

Re: What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
Thanks for all the advice guys. I am a bit lost here I think. The tensioner seems to have been fitted onto the hull before arrival. So I now need to attach the rear idle wheel somehow. On a heng long this is achieved via a 4 mm screw.
On this hull, there is a small metal axle which seems to fit, it is 4mm wide but it does not screw in. It seems to have a similar type of connection to the wheels. ie, a grub screw etc. Trouble is the axel does not keep the wheel tight enough. I have added four washers and still there is loads of play.
Here are some photo's.

The third picture shows the small hole for fixing the axle in place, is that correct? Seems a bit weak.
SO what are my options? To be honest, I am not really sure how the tensioner even works as I have never had a tensioner before, so perhaps someone could explain how it tensions the wheel, which in turn I guess creates tension on the track!
Please help! Thanks for all the replies so far!
Cheers Mark

Re: What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
Hi Mark , the 4mm axle is correct . The slack is likely to because it won't go all the way in if the wheel is assembled , you need to split the wheel and then you can push the axle fully home , i used a little loctite on the end , nip the screw up and then superglue the outer half back on - be sure the track runs freely first , sometimes the hubs need trimming or packing out to achieve this . there should be a tiny amount of sideplay on all the wheels to prevent binding .

Re: What idlers do I need for an asiatam hull?
Hi Mark,When my hull was purchased the axle were and issue, and the tensioner axle. I tapped the control arms and the tensioner arm.Using 3.5 mm Allen head bolt to replace the stock axles, this along with plastic washers created a very stable wheel mounting.
I have repeated this method on my Tamiya tanks as well, I am not saying this should be done just suggesting another option.
