The Flood of May 2011 Mississippi River

Post by Saxondog »

Today I crossed the Mississippi River from Memphis,Tn. to the Arkansas side of the River. The River is a large bend in front of Memphis,Tn. and typically flows fast at this point as Memphis is on a large bluff,or Hill. The river is about 3/4 mile wide normally at this point.

Today the River is 3.2 Miles at this bend, flooding to the Arkansas or West bank side, past the normal bank to a levee built to protect the city of West Memphis,Ark.

The area flooded is a farmers field and the rail road tracks leading into Memphis, Memphis has 4 bridges, two are for car traffic and the newest being 30 years old,the oldest about 100 years old.

These bridges move more freight by truck and train then any point in the USA. Also one of the reasons during the cold war it was said Memphis had 10 ICBM's aimed at us.
