Prisoner of War disaster on the Mississippi River

Post by Saxondog »

Recently Andy sent me a link concerning the E-Boat attack by the German Channel naval fast attack torpedo Squadron Against a practice Convoy Operation Tiger for the coming D-Day landings.this event cost the lives of 986 Allied soldiers. I then remembered an event here recently because of the attention on the Mississippi River flooding.

Mississippi River April 27,1865 on-board the American steamer Sultana

April 27,1865,American packet steamer Sultana, which suddenly exploded and sank in the Mississippi River near Memphis on April 27, 1865. Estimates of the loss of life range from 1,450 to 2,200. Almost all of the victims were exchanged federal prisoners of war on their way home from Confederate camps. A recent article in The Washington Times called the Sultana sinking "the most staggering and appalling marine disaster in history."

Their are many chance meetings in war, mechanical failures, and poor planning that result in Tragic events and then as now the only solution is to end War. Considering it is the second oldest human activity it is not ending any time soon.
