havent been near this for a while i did the tracks the best i could to look like metal and made a jerry can holder also have done some paint chipping still more to do and i have to add some tools yet
Looks very good, I forgot to check back but I remembered reading somewhere late Tigers had additional armour plate welded to the turret roof at some point, this was in response to the number of shell hits from above (explosive rain). I was wondering if that extra plate made people think the cupola was too high.
I have recently, acquired some Spielberger books, some recent and some dating back to 1966 and they are very good sources of information and diagrams. Should there be anything specific let me know.
You may already know but I take Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM for my joints with noticeable improvement in mobility, I've been taking it for years now. My parents also take it and it is now a popular supplement prescribed by vets.
It's usually from shellfish so if you are allergic don't neck them!
the turret armour plate was not added as such but a thicker piece that made a step where the roof met with turret sides,Raven does your tank have zimmerit,if not it would represent one of the very early mid production that first appeared late summer 43 these had a small plug pistol port on upper port turret rear, instead of old type.also they had normal turret roof, anyway neat job! by the way LMN how are your tanks in the workshop yet?planning upgrades?
Aha just did some digging, the new book I have has a brilliant modification log.
September 1943 thicker 40mm turret roof plate proposed, single piece. Fitted from 250991 March 1944. Loaders hatch changed at this date, frame removed and countersunk.
May 1944, turrets made with two 40mm plates welded together behind loaders periscope armour cover.
So both right!
The tanks are great thanks! Looking at possibly upgrading the Abrams to the HL electronics and replacing the tracks and drive sprockets. Possibly go for the gearbox but I've yet to open it up for a look and plan.
The T34 has been stripped, battery box removed and a reinforcement plate added (letterbox panel fitted almost perfectly from B&Q). It has the electronics in and wired and nearly everything works but the tank on HL electronics had bizarre controls. Left was forward and right backwards. I fixed this but now left is right and vice versa so I think so more wiring is needed or at least playing with plugs.
Upon arrival I replaced the tensioner with a spare, I then broke the other one while fiddling with tension. I couldn't get the tracks apart and so replaced them with new ones after a pick went 1cm into the top of my thumb!
Like Raven I still have my almost all metal Tiger to finish in mid to late production and have painted my Panzer III. Also a WSN Tiger needing attention.
so the may 44 was that a laminate on the turret roof rear, and was it done in production,I believe the move to thicker roof was experience of US 155mm in Italy, there seems to be other examples of extra roof protection on other German tanks in Italy, maybe because in the restrictive terrain one Panzer could hold up Allied advance in a way that would'nt happen elsewhere,so heavy arty was used to knock the ****! out of anything that got in the way,an indication of this is the plentiful use of the dug in Panther pill box in Italy.talking of this anybody see the article about a Panther stellung dug up from under a railway embankment in Poland recently,it was German land back then Stettin am Oder,it still had dozens of live rounds in situ,if that had gone off while the 5.30 to Gdansk had been passing,I think the was over a 100 rounds there, phew!
