King Tiger 'Willi'

Post by majordisastor »

Ok folks, This is just the opening shots in what will be a slow build ......

The plan is to build a later model King Tiger that took part in the Ardennes campaign, which was probably the Tiger 2's finest hour during Hitlers last roll of the dice.

Anyone who has looked over the Battle of the Bulge pictures will have come across this photograph ....

Image

This is what I am aiming for ......As you can see there is a little work to do to arrive at somthing even half decent ....

Image

Just sitting down with a morning coffe in the sun and a Hb pencil showed at least 20+ corrections and reworks so far.

Image

That light cable will have to go for a start .....

Image

Plotting out rear deck modifications .....

And the same for the turret ...

Image

For starters I have added a thick alloy plate along the whole length of the floor pan.

Image

Its held in place with longer Hex screws than the Schmo upgrade offering. I treated myself to the really tiny hex head bolts to hold the torsion bar fittings - shame they will not be visible once the wheels are on ..

Image

I will post more detailed explanations and pictures as the build progresses..

AS for the name ? Well I chose 'Willi ' simply for the old gag - Willi he hurry up and finnish it ? -

It will also be worth looking at the panic in club members eyes if I walk up to them and ask them ' Do you want to see my Willi ? '

This could run and run ..............

Andy I have about some 700 odd pics of king tigers if you would like them , just bring a blank dvd when I see you soon and I shall copy them off for you , a lot of these are of models but they give you some very useful up-close shots which are not always about these days ........

not only are you going for scale weight(which I think is a great idea) so I'm not taking the Michael (Wittman)your workspace is exact reproduction of Henschel werk in august 44 with Tiger II built alongside the final Tiger I's all you need is a visit from the RAF to complete the picture,Achtung! Luft alarm! great work on ebbey, are you also trying to reproduce the scale of man hours also,

Fortunatly there is no clear and present danger from the RAF - although we had a direct hit on the conservatory yesterday morning from a passing seagull ---Himmel, Actung der splatter bomb !!! 8O

Your comparrison with the Henschel werks is maybe closer than you think - always waiting for parts, and lots of other tank bits stacked up around the place.

All good fun though !!
