How best to thin varnish?

Post by dsvirus »

I am about to put a coat of clear gloss varnish on my tank before I wash, weather and finish it.

What is the best method to thin the varnish so I can airbrush it? Normally, I use windolene. Would that be ok?

hi dsvirus,

get the 400ml aerosol cans of Vallejo matt varnish (or gloss if you want it).
It's easy to spray on, no waste and ready to use instantly, no spraygun to clean after.
A couple of light coats and jobs done.

That is good news to me,did not know the matte varnish is available in aerosol? Your right about the clean-up being a hassle. I sprayed my King Tiger today and had problems with my gun and then the clean-up. Is their a product number?

Normally I just blow a load of windolene through the airbrush after I have used it. This seems work with paint; is varnish more tricky to clean off?

hi dsvirus

You're right, it's not any more difficult that cleaning paint but I'm a lazy sod and if I can find an easier way, that's for me ;) .
It also gives a first class job, no mixing, no hassle.

Sax, if you just look up Vallejo Matt Acrylic Varnish 400ml you should find it no bother.

I have airbrushed one coat on, it has dried for a few hours. How long should I wait before I put another coat on. I have thinned it down so it was quite a thin coat.

Im at the gloss stage, not the matt at the end
