Visiting the UK from Downunder
Wife an I are planning what will probably be a trip in a life time trip to the UK in late June.
No kids coming so have been given permission to plan a few visits, have good friends in the
south of the country so Bovington a must, Imperial War Museum and would like to go and
see the Sandringham Flying boat in the Solant Sky Museum, I think it's called, in Southampton.
Wow just checked the Tank Museum calender tankfest 25-26/6/11!
Any other must do's and/or tips for a Kiwi and his Aussie wife to visit in the south of England?

If you are in that area places I would like to visit include HMS Victory and HMS Belfast.
It is never just "one" tank!

Yeah HMS vIctory is good, HMS Warrior was even better I thought, not sure if the Mary Rose is closed off for a refurb tho. The submarine museum is also worth a punt if you're down to see the victory. Whats that tank collection on the IoW called?

If your holiday stretches over to the end of July then the War & Peace show at the Hop Farm Beltring, Kent is an absolute must. Went last year for the first time and definitely going again this year it is amazing.

Hi,
The submarine museum at Gosport is well worth a trip (mind your head), so is the Warrior. Trouble with Victory is that so many people want to see it that tours are very brief and rushed.
If you are here then, try to visit Duxford on the 19th June. Its not far from Cambridge and is a branch of the Imperial War Mus. On that date the UK tank Club are booked to perform so if you want to see some 1/6 and 1/4 scale models this is the place to be.
No doubt you will spend some time in London. What is there is too much to list and you will have to be selective. I would suggest at least a couple of weeks there, preferably more!!!!!!! Quickest way to get around is on the tube. 3 big museums, all close together, Science Mus., the Victoria & Albert and the Natural History. All well worth a visit. You will love the Science Mus. and the time will just fly by!
Watch out for pickpockets in London.
Come for as long as you can. We are only a small island, but there is one h*ll of a lot here!

Duxford, a battle of Britain fighter station near Cambridge. Probably the best in England.
A massive collection of warbirds & you can walk through the hanger's to see the incredible work going on to restore & keep these machines flying.
It also houses the American air museum with has one of the finest & humbling memorials to airmen lost during WW2. I am not ashamed to say i shed a tear when i saw it.
And, it has a good tank museum too.
There is resonably priced accommodation nearby which is a good thing for one day just is not enough. There is always an advert in FlyPast magazine for this bed & breakfast as i recall.
I visited it often when i lived in Suffolk & cannot recommend it highly enough.
Hope you have a wonderfull time while you & your lady are here, Andy.

Wow thanks everyone, thought you folks would sort things out for me!
Going to be busy, don't mind the odd warbird or submarine for that matter!
Don't know what she's going to do, hope there's plenty of shops!!!!!

Can only concur with all the above, but especially Duxford. If you're around early July, then 'Flying Legends' Airshow is a brilliant day out. Usually the first weekend in July, it is run by The Fighter Collection and is the best Warbirds show in Europe. Details on IWM Duxford website.

Oh I forgot about the Sub museum, another place on my list as well. You think my better half would mind if I spent our honeymoon at Bovington? I was thinking of suggesting Hawaii and take her along to a romantic tour of the Missouri!
The good thing about these museums is that they are charities so your patronage will be most welcome, and needed.
