I just wondered if this was viable as having used them in helicopters and boats I know how small, powerful and reliable they can be. Also the speed controllers are pretty tiny too.
Just aware how much current cheap 380/400 size motors draw for their size and power output.
Has anyone considered/tried brushless motors?

Hi Most brushless motors only go one direction ,they also tend to draw alot of amps .The only 1/16 tank I know use these motors is the Areo-mate all metal Tiger 1,cant use the basic electrics we use El-mod, Tamiya or Heng long .So it would mean making your own along with battle system/control system.

Sorry, but the tankers don't really seem to know about brushless. They are LIGHTYEARS ahead of the brushed motors in EVERY WAY. They are available in a hug profusion of capacitys and speeds/power. Just pick your poison. They need brushless controllers though, so they can't use the normal stuff as you mentioned. I'll be putting them in my Jagdpanther eventually. Check out "Hobby City" - ultra cheap.

Well that's been my (limited) experience too. Getting a brushless motor with a (usually quite small) esc which offers fully proportional control fwd and rev is reasonably cheap these days. Additionally they are tiny for a motor of similar output and much more efficient.
They CAN pull big amps when loaded but so do brushed motors, except without the output. As you say though, the snag is they need a compatible ESC which means a setup which uses standard RC kit (or which is compatible). In a low geared, low load application like a Tank, they should draw less that a traditional motor and give better running times.
I definitely want to get into the IR battle scene so think much of my stock HL electronics will go anyway and I would like to incorporate brushless main motors in the process.

Thanks for clarifying... didn't want folks to be scared off, but like you said, the bi-directional esc may be the limiting factor, plus you can't just plug them into the stock board or the elmod unless they make a brushless version... Consider it an "advanced" mod I guess eh?

Re: Has anyone considered/tried brushless motors?
What is the advantage? They extend drive times? More torque? Less heat? All I'm asking is for the many changes needed to run these motors I do not see any advantage?
I run Gruapner speed 400 motors,8.00us each, 3300-3600 mha batteries giving good drive times of 45-60 minutes, with fan cooled RX18 BOARDS i have rum my Tiger for well over a year with no problems.
So if I used brushless, and the controllers how would I operate the other systems in the tank? Would this type of drive require different power sources for receiver, control unit, drive package?
So I ask to what advantage would these motors be?

Re: Has anyone considered/tried brushless motors?
Fair point Saxondog, as you say, there's an element of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' really.
There would probably be more justification if performance was an issue but sound like even the heaviest upgraded tanks are giving decent running times, especially if LiPo batteries are used (up to 5000mha).
Might aslo be more tempting if the control units didn't have integrated speed controllers, but as you say, it would involve a lot of mucking around for probably very little gain.

No real advantage in these little tanks. Makes a huge difference in Aircraft where watts/lb matters a LOT.

Hi,
I am using brushless in my 1/6 DID rc-d kettenkrad. I had to because the brushed did not have enough power (heng long gears in new housing for low profile).. :

Here on one side brushed and on the other brusheless (kv 2200) during trials..

Two cheapo ESC from Hobby King 15 $ and programming my futaba Tx with mixes it works like a charm:
Check it out:
Some drifting
Cheers
