Wittman Tiger question

Post by Panzerman »

I would like to model a non zimmerit Steel wheeled Tiger.

Hoping someone may know if any of Micheal Wittman's
steel wheeled Tigers did not have zimmerit?

Thank you.

hi Panzerman
two tanks that didn't have zimmerit were 1313 and S04 but they wouldn't have steel wheels. Any others he had that were steel wheels would have zimmerit.

Hi Panzerman
The three late tiger 1 that Wittman used in 1944 were 205 witch was his own tiger/222 witch he used at vilears bogage/ and 007 witch was Von westernhagen"s tank that he used because he"s own tiger was out of order and the one that he and he"s crew were killed in.All the tigers had zimert..... Hope this helps?? All the best Brian.....

Re: Wittman Tiger zimmerit question

I have a 1/35th rc Tiger I with steel wheels I wanted to
do a Wittman Tiger and to be honest I was a bit scared
of stuffing up the zimmerit.

So now my question is the best way to create zimmerit
in 1/35th scale, I have tried tamiya putty but it dries
too quickly before I get the lines in.

Any Tips on the best putty to create zimmerit?

Thanks again.

Cheap & easy Zimmermit.
Don't know if anybody has thought of this. I started modelling about 1960: Yes i am that old! I found then, that one of the best things to model zimmermit in, was Tile Grout. It is of a fine consistany, goes off slowly when applied over a non porous surface, Sticks like the proverbial to a blanket, can be chipped in a fashion that looks very realistic & works on any scale. I have used it on tanks from 1/72, 1/48 & 1/35. The best thing about it is that if you f##k up, due to the slow drying time its easily removed with a damp cloth. Another bonus is that it takes paint beautifully. Paint your tank in its factory colour base paint, apply the paste, & there you go.
Hope this helps.
Ps. Use the stuff You mix yourself & this is where her indoor's gets to join in with your hobby. Ask her whats the consistency of 'butter cream'. If she knows how to bake a cake she will know this.....

So I have been searching the net trying to work out which
Tiger I Wittman used for his famous Viller-Bocage battle.

From what I can gather he borrowed '222' because his usual
ride '205' was out of action. From what I can also make out
'222' was in very good condition, no battle damage etc.

There is some argument that he used '212' or even '231' for
this action, can anyone shed some light on the subject or am
I opening a "can of worms" here?

I would imagine more senior and therefore more experienced
officers would have borrowed tanks from less experieced
officers quite often, so I guess this is feasible!

Anyone know of any good links out there re Wittman's tank at
Viller-Bocage?

there's a very good article here -

http://www.panzerace.net/english/pz_vil.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The "what tank" will rage for ever, personally I went for 222. Contrary to what the article says Bobby Woll was not his gunner on the day. Bobby Woll had his own tank by then and was hospitalised at the time of Viller Bocage.
