Weathering with Salt
I am relatively new here but not to the hobby scene and I thought I might share some of the techniques Ive used when building Submarines.
To be fair and honset I did not invent this technique. I learned it from one of my fine scale modeler magazines. They are not the cheapest magazine but when the weathering issues come up buy them!
Step 1
Paint your base coat. This will be the color that you wish to show through the final coat.
Step 2
With a brush, paint water onto the hull.
Step 3
While the boat is wet take a brush and dip it in table salt. Then stipple the hull in a random patter to give it a natural look.
Step 4
Allow the salt and water to dry. If you feel you have put to much on brush some off. If oyu want more ad more.
Step 5
Paint your final color and allow it to dry.
Step 6
Use a cloth or your had or brush... you get it, and wipe away the salt. It should look like the paint has flaked or fadded away to the base coat.
Now I took this process to the next level and did it in 2 layers. Once with the red to black. I then did another layer of salt prior to spraying the light gray to make the paint look faded.

All I need is a tank that can dive like a sub and shoot torpedoes.

You can also choose what size salt grain to use to make it more or less apparent. Grinding it to nearly a dust makes for a nice effect.

I might try this out on the ARIZONA. I am planning the paintwork and have decided to model Arizona after her last refit/modification and prior to the MS21 Paintwork. I like the look of under paint rust and the old surface fleet of Dreadnoughts certainly had rust.
