1/16 Tamiya King Tiger

Post by Rogue Sub »

This will be my first experience building an RC Tank. I had this one fall into my lap recently and I have always wanted to build one of these so here it goes.
My knowledge base is very low as of yet since there is only so much net surfing you can do before your but gets tired.
I ill try to describe what I am doing as best as possible and hope that you guys can slap my hands for screw ups or poke me in the right direction.

Here is what I got.
Zimmeret has been started and most the models sub assemblies have been completed. I have started putting all the sub assemblies together and making dry runs of the assembly to ensure it will all go together as designed.

All I need is a tank that can dive like a sub and shoot torpedoes.

Very nice, this is the older Drive version. Many here have built these,I think the kit number is 56004 King Tiger. I have never built one my King Tiger was a find on here and then the detail work I have done like the Zimmerite adhesive panels, the lower hull is complete so possibly we could both learn from the experienced Builders look forward to your progress.

I have discussed some of this tank with a local club and they say that this tank was not capable of running the tracks in opposite directions so I see no need to update the drive system. I do however not like the speed of this thing. It is way to fast. I am thinking about putting a pitman motor in the tank or one of my 75t lathe motors to slow her down and give her more torque.

I have also been told that the stock turret set up tends to operate better and more smoothly so I am going to keep that as is for now. Another motivator is that I found I over paid for the tank considering what was included. Another fun life lesson! Damn the impulse buy..credit cards max speed!

As for the Zimmerite.. I have been experimenting on my poor tank. I have been trying white squardron putty and an exacto blade... Not that happy.
I just ordered some millput though and will be trying that using a screw driver. Any input or experience on this process is more then welcome. My only saving grace is that this was done in real life by hand in war time conditions I.E. it was likely slapped together as fast as possible. I will take some pictures in a bit after it dries.
All I need is a tank that can dive like a sub and shoot torpedoes.

Well it came with jack and shit... Does that count?
Right now I am just driving it around for fun with a tazer 15 esc, one Futaba s3003 servo for sterering, and a 2 channel 2.4ghx trans. Seriously I got this thing sat and have not made any decisions yet as I want them all to be well informed from this point fwd.
Suggestions welcome.
I am not sure what benefit I will gain from switching to a twin motor set up to be honest. Can you elaborate.
I am working out a way to control the elevation with a micro servo in my head and some sort of recoil system. It could all be achieved with the use of a stamp controller but the real question is..whats your time worth?

Henschel King Tiger pictures below are the version 56018 that has the dual drive factory recoil and elevation. But the rotation unit is a modification designed by another forum member. But it works well and saves space in the hull. Hopefully this will give you some idea of the other systems available.

So what are you using to control all that and is it compatible with the battle systems.

I mixed up two post so let me add that the Zimmerite I am using is the Tamiya stick on set. Peal and stick type. This set is available and it may be a better choice. I know for me it is much easier but I have not painted over the zimmerite panels just cut and applied at this point. The picture below is the other have of the rotation mod.

I cannot find the correct number, follow this link http://www.aaftankmuseum.com/kingtigerpg2.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the girls name is Karen Gasser the King Tiger Parts screen has the decal bag listed at the bottom. Now either I got them from Karen or a vendor called Jason's store on ebay. You can email Karen and she could give you the correct part number its two letter size sheets of peel and stick. She may have them in stock and she does have good prices. I'll post another link I am checking that may have the sheets. cheers Sax
