my first worked on Tiger 1

Post by oldfeller »

my first worked on HL Tiger 1

The camo was based on the “ SCHWERE PZ. ABT. 502. September 1942 “
History on the s. PZ. ABT 502,
s.Pz.Abt. 502 (later redesignated s.Pz.Abt. 511) Tiger I & Tiger II Mammoth Formed August 1942. Sent to front near Leningrad in August 1942. First Tiger unit into combat. (2nd Ko. was attached to s.Pz.Abt. 503 and eventually became 3rd Ko. of s.Pz.Abt. 503.) The unit fought on the Eastern Front until the end of the war. Renamed s.Pz.Abt. 511 in January 1945. s.Pz.Abt. 511 picked up several Tiger IIs late in the war.

To keep the cost down :D to paint the camo I dug through my numerous collection of Humbrol and Revell paint tins “ in various stages of going off “ and found two I could use and looked near to the colour that the tank was painted in “ I am colour blind though “.
I had a bit of fun with this tank and went a bit  with the mini drill with grinder making shell damage, cut one of the side plates off, to make the rest look damaged I reshaped them by using a candle to warm the plastic then shaped, before I done this I used a junior hacksaw to cut between the plates, I also use a heat gun on the rear of the tank to reshape the exhaust covers, this method was a bit drastic as I nearly melted the rear :{ :{ , “feel free to give comments good or bad, all feedback is welcomed.
“ Hi xrad  “, please don’t hit me so hard this time stayed in bed for two days last time and I’m under a psychiatrist now, he delved into my brain  and found out the reason for my recurring nightmares of badly pruned trees attacking me, you ;) , “ I am getting a little bit better :lolno: “.
As this Tank now as a metal barrel as a safety precaution I’ve disconnected the firing switch.

PROMISED LAND

Now I have to find that Promised Land that us tankies can go and play, where you have the right terrain that as little dirt tracks with little stones, that twine through grass banking’s, with rolling hills with the right gradients that we can drive over, grass that you can drive through (not lawns), pools of water at the right depth that our electrics don’t get wet.

Mud that you can drive through and not stick only splashes a little making our Tanks look weathered.

Where you can meet other Tankies and have a chat over a cupper from the flask about things like, camo the length of our barrels
(I said barrels :lolno: ;) ) and if we have upgraded to metal or brass gears, metal wheels, metal tracks and other things only us Tankies understand.

Yes that Promised Land, that Promised Land, our Garden of Eden.

Lots of research done there. I go into homer Simpson mode when I have to think about tank numbers. Well done on the tiger. I hated camp before I started airbrushing. You need to get it driving now. I just got that item posted this morning thanks to snowfall here. Are they metal tracks and sprockets. If they are I hope you have a good gearbox.

Hi Johnf
Cheers Mate, thanks for letting me know you have posted, that was the tank in the snow the hatch was propped
up to put the commander in, metal gears no such luck like I said no where to drive them I just painted over the
plastic with silver then a bit of rust effect looks OK as a static model.

 Hi there,
I thought I had better post some where other than on introduce myself although the response is supurb, thanks for your in put.
Your Tiger looks great, hope mine looks half as good. Trying to convince my wife I need an Asiatam hull but she says break the thing first, they dont understand, these woman 8O I am nearlly 50 and I need my toys, STAMP STAMP and Throw my self on the floor

Gonna be nosey now, the dents in the exhausts and side panels, how did you do them they look really realistic?
My Tiger had a bit broken off the side panel and I am thinking of trimming the break to make it look battle scarred as I have seen this done on other tanks and the effect is brilliant.

Better go now, cheers for now Andy

Hi Andy
Cheers Mate, Enjoy your Tanking to keep your cost to a minimum run them,
then you will find out how much you want to spend, like your wife said break them
first, I try to make my hobby,s as cheap as I can " I'm tight " I go to bed and these
things come into my head, I thought I'll cut the side plates, when I cut them I went a
bit off on one so I thought cut it off then I warmed up the rest with a candle and used my fingers
to bend them then for the rear of the tank I used a heatgun, but what you got remember is I only
payed £25.00 for this tank so be careful, when I used the candle I held it to close once and there
was smoke coming from underneath " melting " " i was lucky it was only where the to halves meet
same with the heat gun, take your time when stripping down and making it battle scarred
Gerwyn
PS. At to add to this due to having a little drink last night :{ :{ " RBL Branch Chrismas party :D

Hi Gerwyn,
It's good to see you have accepted that this will not be your only tank.
Give it a few months and your Tiger will be on it's 3rd paint job and you'll have at least 1 more tank on your workbench.
Welcome to the slippery slope my friend :haha:
Frank
Hi Frank
Its thanks to you and others like you on this forum  that I was able to build this tank,
and keep the cost down :D " not only sending me parts free but with the help in stripping it down ",
my Nephew said last night that I should be having the circuit board back at Christmas :D ,
then I can finish that one, I've got one more out the shed which I have tested it runs
OK but the barrel as no up/down movement :problem:, the other one is the Panzerkampfwagon
which is still like new the bits that came with it are still in the box.

Like Andy-T said the exhaust damage is very well done, maybe a bit of luck involved as you were using a heat gun but its certainly turned out good. I like your paint too, especially the wheels, however I think the rubber on the wheels is rather new looking, I just painted over them with a mud colour and splashed a bit over the wheels too on mine.
