Turret protection ring for the HL Tiger 1
Hi this is very simple realy .BUT YOU MUST CENTERLISE YOUR TURRET AS THE HENG LONG TURRET SPINS OFF-CENTRE . Im not sure if the Tamiya turret could be used ?
Once turret is centerlised :
PLEASE NOTE THE END OF THE RING IS INCORECT ON THE PICTURES IT SHOULD STOP NEARER THE SECOND BOLT ON THE ENGINE DECK COVER. NOT THE FIRST. THE SIXTH PICTURE DOES SHOW THE CORRECT POSSITION .
1: Draw a line around the turret leaving the thickness of a hair gap,
2: Remove the turret,
3: Cut a hole large enougth for the middle of the turret to sit in , in a piece of plastic sheet ,
4: Draw around the turret leaving the thickness of a hair gap (this gives the inside measurment),
5: draw a second line around the turret to the thickness you require the turret ring to be (this gives the outside measurment),
6: Cut ths shape out and tidy up,
7: I then layed and taped the ring onto the tank using the line that I put on earlyer as a guide ,
8: I then decided were I thought the ring should end at the rear of the tank as theres a gap . It finishes in line with the second bolt in on the engine deck covers ,
9: I then put the turret on and checked it spins round ok,
10: I drilled several holes in the ring and through the tank so I could position it back on for gluing by using small pins ( be carefull not to drill through anything on the tank),
11. I fixed the ring to the tank and remove or trimed of the pins . I used milliput to gain the slight angle to the ring.
12: I used the excelent post from Steiner ( Thankyou ) and printed out a plan that shows the bolt holes and the joins that make the ring look as if its made from three pieces as the originals were . Each segment has 7 bolt holes but only 5 are used . So I made imitated bolts in the 5 and filled the others just so they show as per the original ring segments.
13 : Re fit turret ,
14 : Another feature conected with the turret protection ring was the three bolt hinge on the escape hatch . This was reduced to two bolts and the hole for the third , bottom bolt just showing . This was so it would clear the turret protection ring .

Andy, nice job on this build and great job on the turret ring!! I just started my late conversion, but it will be a slow process and not quite to the extent that you are doing. Just not enough hours in the day :-\
Re: Turret protection ring for the HL Tiger 1
I ordered a Bosch headlight to install and replace the two HL lights for my late conversion. Did you just remove the factory lights and replace with the one you installed and use the same wiring or do you have to do anything to reduce the voltage? I'm just wondering about replacing one headlight where two used to be and blowing out the new light because of too much current.

Hi Ern ,
I ran one set of wires to the front light . But I put an on/off switch so I can turn the light of as Im sure the real thing wasnt on all day ? Im going to run some cable from the 8pin conector via an on/off switch to my rear convoy light to . As for electronics its not my field . But all I can say is mines ok . I cant remember what I did with the other wires . I will pm you regarding the turret .
All the best Andy

Hi Guys try this out for the Tiger 1 protection ring template. I got it from the RCU site and used it on my Tamiya Tiger 1. I downloaded it and then got it photocopied but reduced by 5% to get a better fit on my Tiger. Any issues let me know.

Hi This is ok for the Tamiya Tigers but the HL versions the turret spins of centre . You can fit this ring but you must alter the ring on the bottom of the turret . If you dont the turret wont spin it will bind on the ring. I know that they were in 3 segments and I think they had several bolts to hold them . However not all bolt holes were used and the ones not used were filled . But great ring pattern

I have issues with it... it doesn't show where to drill the holes.tankman wrote:I got it from the RCU site ... Any issues let me know.

Each segment of the ring had 7 holes, and 5 of them were filled with cone-head bolts. These bolts have no surface detail, so they look like nothing at all when they are installed. The only detail you need to add is the two unused, open holes in each segment.
This is a profile of the ring and the bottom of the turret. All dimensions are in millimeters, so you must divide by 16 or 35 or whatever. The distance 1160 is measured from the turret axis:
You can see an open bolt hole in that profile.
Here is the ring seen from above, showing the 6 open holes:
And a view of one segment, with precise measurements:

Hi , Excelent info mate , wish I had the measurments of the holes when I fitted my turret ring . I have the seven bolt holes and five used with the other two filled. This info will greatly help anyone fitting this ring . Ive gota get my Tiger sprayed and the post finished . But all remember this ring wont fit streight onto a standard HL Tiger 1 . You need to alter the turret base .

Hi JohnF , remember tho you cant just stick the ring on a stock HL Tiger you need to alter the turret base and I also moved the hole on the upper deck backwards to.
