Heng long Panzer iv in progress

Post by combatsmurf »

I,ve just started a partial redo of the HL panzer 4. which i,m enjoying more than i expected. To breifly explain the pics,
firstly i re sprayed the with white acrilic primer. Modelling paints tend not to adhear very well to the factory paint even after a detergent wash. Then i pre-shaded with Tamiya dark grey, over this i sprayed a thin mix of Desert yellow, gradualy adding white for the centre of the panels. This was followed with several burnt umber oil paint washes, and then lamp black pin washes to bolts and panel lines etc. Just needs some more work with powderd piments and maybe some rain streaks and the like.
Befor painting i replaced the rubbish rear fender springs with ones made from fuse wire and the jacking block was scratch built and added to the model.
The exhaust was pinted with a mix of rust colours mixed with polyfilla to achieve a rough surface finish and then topped off with dark washes. Thats as far as i,ve got so far, oh apart from adding an RX-18 multi unit and re-soldered some of the awfull wiring. Please post any comments.

I,ve started the tracks to day. After a thick wash with Artists oils of Burnt umber i added MIG dark earth pigments. When its all dry and cured i shall add some rusty pigment and seal it all in with a varnish spray and then dry brush the track contact points with gun metal. When added to the tank and run around the garden a few times they should look quite realistic.

Excellent work, the detailing is very well done. What type of varnish do you use on the tracks? Saxondog

Thanks for all your kind words guys.
Saxondog, i use Vallejo matt varnish. I find it drys to form a rock hard skin after a couple of days, but needs to be sprayed through an airbrush with a .30 or bigger nozzle if used with solvent thinner otherwise it tends to clog the needle.

I skived a day off work today and got the tracks fitted and other painted tools and equipment, half hour adding pigment powders and an overall covering of matt varnish and its done.
