Question on HL Tiger 1 from a Newbie

Hi There,

I’m a newcomer to this hobby with a recently acquired HL Tiger 1 that I
received yesterday evening. I’m chuffed with it but have one problem that I
need help on. When taking it out of the box I found that the driver’s side
drive wheel (hope that is the correct terminology? the wheel with the teeth
in it) was quite a bit looser than the other. After a short initial drive
round the living room, I found on the internet instructions on how to
access the screw that secures the drive wheel. I tightened it up with an
allen key but it still comes loose after extremely small usage of just
going back and forward indoors. I guess locktight might hold it in place.
Is that the correct thing to do? I’ve also noticed that the same drive
wheel also has about 3mm of play when pulled away from the body (even when
the screw is tight), whilst the other wheel does not. Is that normal? Is it
ok or should I return it?

Blimey I thought mine were loose but they take half hour of severe off roading to come a little loose.
I beleive correct term is drive sprocket , anyway at this early stage it may be worth trying to return and replace it, it will prob get worse over time.
If you have no luck on that front then yeah give locktight a go maybe??

Hi Abit of loctight is right should stop it coming undone ,dont over do it with the loctight.Make sure you have pushed the sprocket all the way on to the shaft and located the drive flat in the sprocket if you have done this.Have you had the tank open yet ,check to see gearboxes are not loose sometimes the screws come out.

P.S. turn the tank upside down and shake it see if there is anything loose inside(sometimes there are screws in there and you dont want them touching the electics)get them out.

As Pete says a bit of loctite should cure it.
There's a tendency for that sprocket to unscrew itself as the tank moves forward, one is trying to unscrew and the other tighten.

Loctite is a bit too permanent. A decent lock washer is all that should be required - either a split or star washer.

Red loctite is permanent, i use blue it's reworkable, don't get it on the plastic.

Hi Just a little blue threadloc or a split washer should stop it coming undone.If you get have any problems put a post up were here to help each other.We were all in the boat you are in at one time,so dont worry about asking questions.

Ive taken new Tanks out of the box and had the drive sprokets fall off before even using them LOL
there should be 2 washers on the screw ones a std flat washer and the other is a small split washer, if you use these two it takes out the play usualy and the split washer stops the screw from comming undone
if your using locktite on the screw ive found its best to just put it on the joint where the head meets the washers this way only a little seeps through to the tread other wise you'll never get it undone again
the other solution is to put a little superglue gel just on the same place and it just helds the screw in place without getting into the thread (easier to get off if you ever need to)

Thanks for the help. I think I have fixed this for the time being. The driver’s side gearbox (one with the lower motor) was missing a C-Clip on the final axel that goes through to the drive sprocket. A small but important detail. I've made one out of some heavy duty Polythene. Since then I think I’ve also found the right size C-Clip in a car spares shop but if anyone knows the exact size of these and where to get them please let me know. I think the polythene will hold for a while.

I've also Locktight'd the drive sprocket using the blue locktight that is re-workable. I had to do this twice as leaving it to dry for 2 hours wasn't long enough and it came undone again. It's had 24 hours now and will be going out for a good ragging later.
