arial length

Post by KV1s »

Hi Guys

Just wondering how critical arial length is???

The reason i ask is that i have just relocated the arial to the front of my KV and it looks a bit daft at standard length,,was wondering if i could cut around 1/2 to 2/3 off of it and still keep some kind of range?

I will admit to doing the old 1/10 tc trick by putting the arial inside the hull and all was well until the tank got about 6ft away from me,not the result i was hoping for

Hi We have had this before ,I dont know if there are any radio hams on the forum ,But my dad was one and to get the best from a radio (transmitter of reciever ) the ariel lengths have to be in fractions of the wave length,1/2 ,1/4, 1/8, 1/16, and and so on ,its called harmonic wave length,so start with 27000mm and keep dividing by 2 till you get to a length that you want to have (the length will be in mm),but the shorter the length the less distance it will work.Alot also depends on the power output from the transmitter (never use the transmitter with ariel down)
27mhz F.M. radio (CB) can transmit from the States to the UK if you have 1/2 wave ariels and the power out put from the transmitter so its not the wave length.

I un-plugged my antenna the other day, because i was running the tank with no upper hull, and i went from one side of our factory to the other, must have been 80 feet :O so i dont think it matters that much, and that was a standard Heng Long

I tried mine without the antenna, just the brass stump and it behaved very erratic..i have made a smaller antenna and it seems ok but i will take it outside later just to make sure it has range outside..

hi
sounds more like your tx is weak or off frequency if it won't work that close. Your antenna, including the internal wire should be 26"(660mm).
