HL recoil mod

Post by mickyb »

Hi guys

I have altered the HL recoil to work a bit better or should I say correctly.

The mod posted a while back is certainly very easy to do, but, when completed I find that I only get 1/2 inch recoil movement. I now have the barrel "snap" back and slowly move forward to rest....it looks good but needs more travel to realy float my boat so to speak.

Has anyone fitted a Tamiya recoil into a HL tank will it work off an RX18?

I have seen the recoil that Fleshy has fitted in his Firefly, it is terific because there is plenty of recoil movement so I am aiming to emulate this as a final fix.

Have a great week

Hi mike
just fitted a tamiya recoil to my king tiger with rx18 . It works really well and I have used a heng long high intensity flash combined with the full fire mod so now I get gun sound, recoil and muzzle flash when I push up on the left transmitter stick. If you need any help or advice on how to set this up just let me know.

Hi Glyn,I am interested in the procedure for this mod.I have purchased a Tamiya King Tiger and it has the recoil but not Tamiya electronics,I have the stock H/L RX18 and receiver for this tank so I would like to install your mod.Could you post the procedure? Cheers Blake

Hi Blake,

I wonder how many folks have done this install, I bet quite a few.

I am fitting Darkith Battle System too, so I know I have to pick up some wiring from the DBC cards. I am woried about frying some expensive electronics so, like you, this info is invaluable.

Any info I get outside this post or from Glyn, I will let you know about.

All the best

Hi Guys
dont have a diagram I am afraid but glad to help in any way I can. The 1st thing you need to do is the full firing mod as shown on the rccomand web site http://www.rccommand.com/guides/RX18FireMod.php . this involves soldering a diode across your rx18 board but is very easy to do.

Once you have done that you will get all functions working in unison when the left transmitter stick is pushed foreward.

Next you need to connect the Tamiya recoil unit to your rx18 as per the diagramme below

The flash unit plugs straight into its socket on the rx 18 with the larger of the two plugs. This will leave you with the smaller plug from the flash unit with no where to go as this would normally plug into the Heng Long recoil unit, dont worry about this plug just leave it loose.

Once you are at this stage everything will work but you will get more than one flash per shot because the flash unit will keep flashing all the time whilst the recoil goes thru its cycle. To stop this all you need to do is add a diode to the white trigger wire on the tamiya recoil unit .

Thats how I did it and everything works perfectly for me, hope all that makes sense to everybody

Tamiya recoils are pretty easy to find on ebay. Try one of the Hong Kong sellers and you should get one for about twenty pounds, as for the diode I am not to savvy about them but I got one from maplins and just specified that the max voltage it would have to work with was 7,2v. I think it was about 20p

hope that helps

No unfortunately you will still get the horrible tank recoil action but I think that rccommand have a thing that you can add to your tank to block it for about £15
