Re: transmitter range
I tried the coil ariel and it didn't work, about 15ft indoors. Yet when I took the external ariel off my HL Tiger a couple of years ago it was hardly affected at all? Weird

Re: transmitter range
Hi,
Interesting subject this, I've played with coil aerials quite a bit on transmitters on the radio amateur bands and the results have been quite impressive - much better than the telescopic or rubber duck aerials fitted as standard to ham rigs.
However, they can be quite critical. If you just wind a coil using the same length of wire you cut off the Rx, then you have the wrong electrical length. For a close wound coil you might need as much as 80% more wire than you remove from said Rx.
Factors that will effect it are: diameter & length of coil, diameter of wire, pitch of windings, material of former, position in tank, proximity of metal items, etc etc.
Because every installation is different its impossible to give exact details of how to wind the coil, but if I get time I might just have a play!
And yes, you can use them on the Tx as well, but they have to be tuned to the Tx quite accurately.
