Zimmerit Coating
Zimmerit Coating
As the new year has come I am just about ready to start my Jagdpanther build.I have never applied Zimmerit coating to any tank,so my question is should I prime Then Apply the coating, completely paint the tank and then apply? In the factory was the proper method to complete painting the tank and then add the Zimmerit? Another point I don't clearly understand is only applying the coating to vertical surfaces,it would seem like throwing a mine to land on the flat horizontal surfaces would be best, over engine bay or top of armored housing?
Re: Zimmerit Coating
hi Sax, that's the same question I've always pondered, with a lovely flat, vulnerable engine deck, why try and put a mine on the side? Is that perhaps the real reason it was abandoned?
As far as I know it was applied on top of the red oxide then the base yellow was applied over everything.

Re: Zimmerit Coating
The HL Jagdpanther is the late version. It's very unlikely that it would have zimmerit at all.

Re: Zimmerit Coating
I know we all like to be historically correct as much as possible but if you are using milliput for the zimmerit i would sand the surface first with quite a coarse paper so the paste has something to grip to and then prime over the top once it has set hard, so i would not bother priming before you put the paste on. Personally i dont care if the model is to late for zimm, i think it gives the tank a much more real look and less plastic toy

The Jagdpanther I am Modeling is from the Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade(FGB) attached to Grossdeutschland Div.they received 10 Jagdpanthers in Dec.1944.The only picture I have found is a drawing of a Jagdpanther with no Zimmerit but other sources imply that these Jagdpanthers had Zimmerit. So do you know of a source for detailed information on this issue? Here is my source for information, they list September 44 as the date Zimmerit was discontinued at the factory.http://panther1944.de/en/jgpz-jagdpanth ... inweg.html
Re: Zimmerit Coating
hi Sax, the order to discontinue applying zimmerit was issued on 9th September, when the factories implemented it is anybody's guess and there would still have been field applications.
My own view is "it's your tank, go for it"

Re: Zimmerit Coating
I beleive this is the right opportunity for me to experience Zimmerit coating 101.The Jagdpanther I am modeling could of been coated, and I am depicting the unit as It was received by FGB.mY Tiger VI was easier in that respect,I had specific information of what it looked like when delivered, then the three battles and the number of kills for the unit of Tigers after KURSK,and the number of survivors. But with the FGB the record is fragmented, and jumps complete actions without a mention after receiving the 10 Jagdpanther's in DEC.I do know they were received and by whom and where, after that I can tell you only where the unit was fighting and it's two withdrawals for rest and re fit,but know specific number of vehicles after the DEC44 supply and establishment of FGB.If anyone has information on FGB or Grossdeutschland Jagdpanthers after Dec.44 I would like very much to know the source.
