Bad luck oz but a word of warning make sure you are covered for car rental through your insurance most companys have this in there policy but some have it as additional cover that you pay for when you take the policy out. I had a friend who hired a car after somone crashed into him and he ended up with a £450 bill he ended up settling to pay half so beware.

Taxi drivers are required by law to have fully comprehensive insurance and liability insurance. If Tony gives Winns a ring he will get a 'no cost' hire car which will be paid for in full by the other parties insurance. I know this I had the same sort of thing happen to me a couple of years ago. Basically you don't call your insurance company at all, until you have spoken to Winns. Then they will handle everything. thanks for the very helpful advice and support guys, i tried phoning my insurance people but all i got was a recorded message that they will reopen after the holidays.

Err...I work in Motor Insurance, and know the ins and outs of a ducks posterior when it comes to this sort of thing, so here goes.
1. You are lucky, you have witnesses and a police statement to say that he admitted liability.
2. Depending on who you are insured with, you may or may not have had uninsured driver losses. This would mean that if an uninsured driver damaged your car, then you could claim without losing your no claims discount (as long as you can get a reg no). You would still have to pay the excess though. This won't apply in your case, but its worth checking to see if you have it.
3. Likewise vandalism cover. Any damage caused maliciously, but not by a vehicle, you can get it repaired without it affecting your no claims. Excesses still apply though.
4. Motor Legal Protection. This enables you to claim for expenses eg Recovery of Excess, Car Hire, Bus Fares etc by leaving it all in the hands of lawyers. You can either use the one supplied by the insurance company or pick one of your own. Avoid ambulance chasers as they will take a % in commission.
5. Car Hire. If asked if you have any other transport available, say 'no', or you won't be able to claim for it. If you have paid for a guaranteed hire car with your premium then you will get one anyway. If you haven't then there are plenty of companies around who handle this sort of thing, and claim the cost back directly off the insurance company.
6. Car Repairs. You can either use the insurance company recommended repairers, or one that you choose. Following the recent weather the recommended repairers are stacked out, and it may be a couple of weeks before you get your car back. You are perfectly entitled to take it to any repair shop that you choose, and it doesn't have to be a cheap one either. Select a quality repairer, after all its what you pay your insurance for. As long as the insurance company will agree with your choice then they will cough up.
7. You pay your excess to the repair shop, and they collect the rest of the bill from the insurance company. The 3rd party claims come from the taxi drivers insurance company. Remember that until the claim is settled in full you have lost your no-claims (unless its protected). That means that your next premium may be a lot higher, but if the claim is settled in full, this will be reimbursed. This is where Motor Legal Protection becomes a bonus. If the whole of the claim is not settled by the taxi drivers insurance company then you will lose your no claims. Its the lawyers who get that cash back on your behalf. If you don't have it, you have to do the chasing around yourself.
Hope that helps clarify a few things...and the insurance offices will be open about 8am Tuesday morning. Expect a long wait in the call queue for claims as we now have 4 days worth stacked up and they will all ring Tuesday morning!!

Perry is right about that,in Memphis their are more lawyers than cops,firemen and ambulances.All ready to line their pockets over your misfortune.And you would be flush with armor for a while,we just switched to state farm insurance and the basic coverage so I don't loose every thing if I were to hit some uninsured jerk is 150,000 liability,150,000 personal injury.Double what we had in the past because of Memphis having such a bad accident average,don't know about the UK but seems to me you at least deserve a new Sherman,which would be lonely without the new M-16 to pal around with.Best of luck Tony,really happy you were not hurt.By the way what is the minimum driving age in the UK?
