Weathering acryllic or enamel ?

Post by Stormbringer »

Hi folks
Just a quick question on weathering using washes
When i weather my tanks with watered down acrylic and then matt coat it the weathering tends to disappear (not totally but it does tone it down)
Its donkeys years since ive used enamel paint washes but cant remember if it disappears when clear coated
Do you guys use emulsion washes or acrylic ?
Any suggestions tips etc welcomed
Cheers
Alan

I prefer enamel for the longer drying time. But don't forget I'm in the 1% here that doesn't use an airbrush so I use lacquer varnishes so I can't speak to what to use if you are airbrushing acrylics

I wouldn't know if you can airbrush washes I was referring more to the varnishes that would be used with airbrushing acrylic paint coats. Have to be careful what type of thinner you are using. With the lacquers I use for paint coats and varnishes neither enamel or acrylic washes will damage them. Enamel is just so much easier to work with as are oils but I haven't got enough years left on this mortal coil to wait for oils to dry out

I always flat seal before s as my weathering.

Yes, enamel wash can be airbrushed
Good for Zimmerit if you don’t want a heavy finish.

Filters are handy instead of a wash, again for a lighter look.

Pigments with or without fixers.
Good for dust and mud when fixed.

Terrain texture acrylic great for grass under guards, mud on lowest and foot traffic areas.

But I always seal then weather . The effect is not subdued by the deal and can be altered down the track to some degree

Acrylic varnish is temperature sensitive,
Applied under 15c it has the tendency to dry with a milky finish the side effect of this is an inordinate amount of foul language.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:
