Sherman M4A3 76 Free French

Post by Panzermechaniker »

I'll just slip this one in here while the board is quiet so not interrupting some of the more active builds. Starting this one off from a Taigen M4A3 infrared model. The tank I am hoping to replicate is this example. Quite a famous tank as it is the one believed to have knocked out the Panther on the Place de la Concorde during the liberation of Paris and was itself knocked out on Sept.13,1944 at the Battle of Dompaire. All it's crew escaped uninjured. It is now a monument tank in Ville-sur-Illon. These 2 images are from this site which is quite a treasure trove of information. Apparently this was one of the first 50 M4A3 76 built so also has some interesting features. The US originally wanted all M4A3 to go strictly to American units but the Free French got some of the earliest ones as they had suffered high casualties in Normandy and needed replacement tanks asap

I know I'm certainly not the first one here to do this tank but I found it a very interesting subject for my first American tank and a bit more colourful than the usual US Army examples

Anyway wish me luck on this one. It could end up in disaster as I'll be using a Peddinghaus decal sheet and they can be a nightmare for folding on long thin strips like the "Champagne" one but I am going to try a new method to hopefully minimize that. I have a lot of experience with Peddinghaus decals and he does produce lots of interesting subjects i just hate how thick they are and the whole sheet is just one piece.

Also apologies in advance to our posters from France who will no doubt be rolling their eyes with all the mistakes i make on this one :haha:

Since I have no use for smokers it will be ditched and although the battery box is a nice feature I find even in rough driving on our field that I just use velcro on the battery to hold it in place so it is ditched too. Since this is an incredibly strong lower hull (the weight of the lower hull is quite substantial for a medium tank) I didn't see any need to reinforce it outside of just laying the large self adhering velcro floor. This really opens up the hull and no problem at all to fit the Clark TK-50S in.

So jumping way ahead on this build as in the last week the many packages I was waiting for to start moving on it again started to show up every day. It also never occurred to me to look to see if there was a photo etch set for the Sherman and looking at other builds I see there are plenty. So then after tearing the tank apart the first thing that had to go was the comically out of scale Torro muzzle brake. I should have heated it because this thing put up so much resistance to removal I was worried I might damage the barrel. It eventually surrendered. I had sourced a thread end cap but this particular tank was such an early 76 it's barrel end didn't even have the threads that most were delivered with until the muzzle brake became available. Comparison of the Torro one to the properly scaled muzzle brake

I then removed the left side of the mantlet bulb that Torro uses for the airsoft firing warning light and put in the coaxial machine gun flush in the hole as Torro has the machine gun incorrectly on the right side. I see some with the 30 cal barrel slightly protruding but almost all the ones of them in action seem to have them totally withing the mantlet and that is it for the turret as it is going out for all it's new internals and servos and a the many new details that will be added would just be knocked off.

So while everything was off I did new handles for the hatches on the rear upper, put on the engine hatch supports and the track holder cleats and rear light covers that are missing entirely on the Torro. I also did the cast texture on the transmission cover and the cast one piece around the front hatches and did some casting numbers and even a half dozen small weld beads where I thought the Torro ones needed improving. I enjoyed doing them but I am not a fan of ludicrously huge weld beads and looking/picturing the Shermans in Bovington for just this reason I saw that some of the ones I see on the scale model forums while looking impressive are just way over the top in size so I have left the Torro ones. The turret will be another story. It then received it's Vallejo OD base coat and I re-painted the tools in place.
Being a panzer guy I though the ends of the barrel cleaning rods would be brass but later found out they are steel so those have been re-painted.

But the main reason I was rushing ahead on this was to get it to the point I could apply the first semi gloss varnish coat and then apply the Peddinghaus decals to the upper and lower hulls and then re-assemble it so it can be sent out now to Mike to do the servos and other electronic stuff I'm useless at. If they didn't go on properly then the whole project would be out the window and I'd be stuck doing a US example so knowing how much of a pain they can be because of the thickness of the film and them being one piece you have to cut them right to shape which makes accidental folding when trying to apply the very long pieces like the Champagne name a not unlikely scenario. So I figured I'd try something new. I cut the pieces to the shape and then applied some scotch tape to the back of the decal's paper. This allowed me to have an area to hold onto with the tweezers but allow the brush to be able to slowly slip the decal off the backing paper without the tweezers holding onto the decal film and possibly causing a fold. It worked better than I could have imagined and wish I had thought to do this years ago with Peddinghaus ( I do like the sheer amount of different tanks you can model with Peddinghaus although I far prefer ETO Armor and other's actual decal products)

It was a bit of a nervous decal application but they all went on pretty well flawlessly. They have the one coat of semi gloss on to blend in for now and any little issues will soon be hidden once the washes, semi gloss and matte varnishes etc are applied. So with the turret re-attached for transport it's all ready to go to have it's internals all done and I won't bore you guys for awhile with this build :D

Marty: I, too, can use that tape tip for Peddinghaus decals. I have struggled with them before.

:) Superb creation! This tank had three other companions named after French departments: Champaubert, Montmirail, and Romilly. The latter is on display in the town of Romilly-sur-Seine, despite the controversy surrounding it. Is it not the real thing, but a pale imitation? A mystery!

I've got very interested in this tank while researching as much as I could on it. Hoping to do it justice once I restart the build when I get it back. I'm also hoping to pay a visit to see it in the future. I want to visit Strasbourg anyway this year so it would make an interesting day trip from there
