1/6 Stuart

Post by RCBobM »

Hi all,
I will post a bit about a current project. This is a 1/6 scale, steel hull M5 Stuart. It was initially made in CA in about 2008, 2009. I got it from an estate sale. It had no turret, no motors and basic detail. It weigh about 80lbs (36 Kilo) as shown. Each track is all steel and weigh about 15lbs each (7 kilo).

Drive test last summer was fun but encountered a couple problems.

First drive;

Track separated after short time. No major damage, but small end connector pieces were lost in yard. @) 8O

Original end connectors:

The second problem encountered after track separation was motors get very hot. They have plenty of power and torque but being 12V were working hard.

So solution to track issue was to redesign end connector to be one piece. These parts were 3D printed in Stainless Steel. This is problem I did not anticipate having to fix. :headbang:

For the motor heat issue, I found some much less expensive 24V 350 W Scooter motors: They are 5lbs (3 kilo) heavier than the original NPC motors and are physically bigger.

Current state is making parts for the 24V motors and adding some detail bits including a turret! B| :O

Good Afternoon, Rob!
A Great Find and Brilliant followup design and work! Most of us doing the 1\6 Stuart M5 are working doing conversions from the 21st Century Static or RC ( barely) Stuarts. Yours is Heavy Duty with 3D printed Metal on metal Hull and Upper and Turret. I would be interested in the cost of having a set of Tracks printed either in plastic\nylon or metal. There is a provider out there who does the Nylon tracks but the cleanup involved is substantial. If this is something within your wheelhouse, please PM me so we can chat. I want to move on with my Stuart and the Tracks are the next thing that I need (currently using a rubber set from the Static 21st Century tank and they allow for no adjustment and are too tight already)
regards,
Painless

I was thinking that this was one of the Stuarts that was sold by Dave Spring way back when. I found your post on Sixth Army Group so that confirmed it. Great job getting the rest of the parts fabricated. I know a lot of folks lost a bunch of money with Dave on this project. Kinda funny that a guy like you that could finish it found it in an estate sale after you passed on buying one when they were built.

"These parts were 3D printed in Stainless Steel." Gasp! This is just amazing, beyond my capacity, but oh-so-admirable.

Thanks all,
Painless: the cheapest alternative would be Spyker workshop Delrin tracks. Don't know if those are still available from him? If you can print yourself then you can easily print links in ABS, ASA or PETG. Nylon is good choice as well. Shapeways, Sculpteo or Craftcloud3D are good choices for printing. It won't be cheap, probably at least $500 USD.

Tankme: It is indeed a Dave Spring special. I wanted one from him back in 2009ish. He wanted $3000 USD for the hull as is- with no turret. He was very sketchy about when if ever he would have the rest, so I passed on it. I believe he made 5 in total hulls. Never seen anyone finish one. This one came up for sale when the owner passed away - looks like it sat in crate 16ish years? After dealing with Spring, I made my own scratch build M5 in Alum in 2011-2018, so that helped moving this one along as I had the CAD already done. Most of the craftmanship is very good. But some things are complete garbage and would have been a show stopper to the average builder. The end connectors are major issue, although nicely stamped in steel. The other is lack of bearings in the road wheels and Idler wheel. He used tiny plastic bushing. Which under the weight of this thing would wear out fast. I've replaced all with bronze bushing. The completely welded hull is also very stout, but is a major problem shoe horning motors and drive train in through the turret opening - no other access. He clearly never got to the motor mounting phase. The model also had no spare parts - no extra track pin, end connectors or track link. I spent several hours last summer coming the back yard with magnets when the tracks came apart to find the end connector pieces. :headbang: Its been a journey - but most big build's are.

It is a hoot to drive as it very much a mini tank. More progress photos soon.

Bob
