I think the next step will be to try some E-clips. I have a few of those spare to test as they used them to secure the road wheels.

I can confirm that e-clips don't fit into the suspension recess. I also sent an email to Hooben which has been ignored so I've hit them up on Facebook messenger as well.
If all else fails, it appears these things are known as omega clips and similar types they are used in making fishing lures. I've found some local suppliers and while not exact, I might be able to modify them to work.
