I've always wondered what the "B" in Bix stood for. Searching my many foreign language dictionaries, I found the word Schmuck only listed three times. The Scottish dictionary was not alphabetical nor had any pictures and had mostly drinks mentioned.

For the rest of you onlookers, peace be with you! For the hearty souls,
I look forward to calling you Schmucks....

Why Schmuck is not an insult in German - False Friends

The modern German word "Schmuck" originates from the Low German "smuk", which means "elegant". Nowadays, it means "jewellery". It's not an insult in German- I told you!

I see it Ian's way, too. What is more, "low" German is not "lowly": it is Plattdeutsch, the dialect of the northern area where there are fewer mountains. However, in English and Yiddish...well...

"Schmuck, or shmuck, is a pejorative term meaning one who is stupid or foolish, or an obnoxious, contemptible or detestable person. The word came into the English language from Yiddish (Yiddish: שמאָק, shmok), where it has similar pejorative meanings, but where its literal meaning is a vulgar term for a penis.[1] "

Oops! Believe me, Eric, neither did I know that pejorative literal meaning. In fact, when I read our comment above ColemanCollector's, I couldn't figure out why you would need to apologize at all.

As far as I see it, I don’t think you will have offended any one. I do believe we are all adults on here, and quite like being elegant.

I feel as though I should be the one apologising.
