Weapon Station accessory wiring?

Post by Foxhood »

idk if there is anyone who knows about them or has a source of information. But no harm in asking.

There is an optional accessory sold by Toucan for vehicles like the Leopard in the form of a functioning RCWS that can be hooked up to a TK-16.
I was hoping to learn how this thing works electronics wise.

From the images available I'm making an educated guess that there are two generic servos hidden inside, along with a led in the Machine Gun.
6 Wires seem to come from it which might be two for the MG led, two for powering the servos and two servo inputs.

Can anyone confirm this? Or show how it is normally hooked up to a TK-16?

So I just hooked up a weapons station to my 1/8 Abrams, although I’m not using a HL TK MFU

There was a HL TK MFU in it analogous to the TK 7.1, so I’m trying to figure out how you would do this.

So first of all, you’d have to have a TK7.1 for sure. It has a periscope servo you could use for a WS traverse, but it’s an actual servo plug, so you’d have to get a 5v motor to servo board to plug that in, if you’ve just got six wires (got to be traverse motor, elevation motor, and light). The TK 7.1 has an alternate machine gun light port, so you got that covered. The only one I’m not sure about is WS elevation. There is an elevation servo port, but input from the barrel elevation stick is sent to both that port and the regular barrel elevation motor port. So you wouldn’t be able to elevation the WS barrel without also elevating the main gun barrel.

There is a flashing warning light servo port, but it just spins constantly when you turn it on.

Yeah I just don’t know where you would plug in WS elevation. You’d also want to get a slip ring if it doesn’t come with it so your wires don’t get twisted.

Are you sure it’s made for a TK MFU?

EDIT: Oh, it just reread the post, this is for a TK 16. That is similar in layout to something like a Clark Board, or ElMod, or OpenPanzer. In that it has a lot of extra servo ports. So if you got that, you could probably run it. You’d also need your own RX/TX, as I don’t think you can use a regular HL radio with it.

The TK 16 and TK 26 seemed like a good answer for something nicer than the TK 7.0/7.1 (you can use your own RX/TX, it has more servo ports) but I remember someone in the past talking unfavorably about it, but Indont remember anything more than that.

So anyways, if you wanted to do this with a TK 7.1, you could, you just would have to choose between not having WS elevation, or linking it to barrel elevation.

PPS: I also have a CROWS and CROWS LP for my 1/16 Abrams that has both traverse, elevation, and a light, so yes, it can be done at that scale. Mine (both 1/8 and 1/16) were made by DKLMRC.

Guess I should clarify. I'm not really interested in using it with a specific control board. Just how these separate Weapon Station are normally controlled/wired to a electronics board and that they aren't using something stupid like a custom control scheme or something.
I'm making a honest attempt at a new version of the OpenPanzer TCB and am researching if there are any new things that popped up in the past 8 years that might need special effort or extra I/O.

So I’m using OP with my 1/8 with the weapon station. Here is my set up:

I’m using two ER8 Radiomaster receivers. One of them is connected to the OP board via SBUS. That handles all the basic stuff (drive, steering, traverse, elevation, engine on, weapons triggers, sounds triggers, and something else, I made some fancy “fake” 6 and 9 positions switch channels to control the last two by combining a couple of 2 and 3 positions switch channels switches, but that’s not
Important here).

Then the second RX I have weapon station elevation and traverse plugged directly into the PWM side of that same RX (it can do PWM and SBUS), along with some other PWM based stuff.

What I have going on with my remote is when I flick the switch to turn on the weapon station machine gun, I also have the remote change the left stick from controlling channels 3 and 4 (traverse and elevation) to controlling channels 10 and 11 (weapon station traverse and elevation).

You will still need to get two of those motor to servo cards and either solder on your wires, or maybe you can find one pre-wired.
