Play Dirty Movie Jeep

As soon as I knew a ready-made jeep might be available in this scale, I knew I had to have one as a running mate for my ‘Play Dirty’ movie truck. I really appreciate all the builds people do of SAS jeeps, but my jeep build goes back to when I saw the movie back in my childhood. Literally this is Hollywood (or more accurately Pinewood) meets the SAS. In keeping with the off-beat themes, the crew are a bunch of saboteurs driving an American jeep, dressed as Italians, with German markings. Perhaps only Paddy Mayne could think that would work?



There are several places where jeeps feature in the movie, in different configurations. Probably most notable is the opening credits scene that includes a gratuitous jump with a dead passenger. However, I like the idea of the jeep that features most frequently, loaded up with all sorts of desert gear. It is sort of SAS, but with some quirky differences.



The main differences are the single spare wheel, the grill that remains intact, and the use of an MG34 at the front and a water-cooled Vickers in the rear. Hopefully I’ll have some fun doing it.



To help with the build I’ve got a Takom 1/16 kit, some jerry cans and some AFV 1/16 sand tracks on order. I’ll have to work out what to do about the Vickers without it being too costly.

It's a pity that it's 1/14 because there are a lot of resin accessories for the 1/16 SAS Jeep.

There is a 1/16 scale jeep on the market, but it's really hard to find. The larger scale ones are all over the place. This one is genuinely RC and 1/16 scale.

I'm ok with it being 1/14, as my truck is overscale as well. I'd love to see someone use the Takom bits with that 1/16 running gear.

That will be a fun project. I remember watching that movie as a kid on a tiny B&W TV at a cottage with poor staticky reception. Couldn't figure out what the heck was happening!

I am fond of my WCP Jeep, but there were thousands in WWII, so there must be room for another kind, too.

I started by disassembling the Jeep to remove a few bits, make any mods and prepare it for the desert paint job.

The first thing I removed was the winch – it is a nice feature, but not seen in the movie. I could not do much more without removing the body from the chassis. As I am a bit of a pioneer in pulling it to pieces and there is no diagram to go by, I took photos and bagged each section, so I knew where they came from. This ended up including the MFU, the lighting board and their associated plugs, so as to paint it completely.

Now that it was in pieces, I could take a closer look at what the Takom kit might donate to my project. The answer surprised me – not a lot. There are definite differences where you would trust Takom to be correct, but it would only have a minor effect on the overall outcome. Almost all of the details are so close to the Takom kit, it is not worth sacrificing it.

There were only two areas I would consider, and that is the four body rivets next to the passenger’s seat and the hole in the bumper for the hand crank.

Other bits no longer needed for this build include:

• Mudguard spot lamp
• Rear seat
• Canopy and its brackets
• Windscreen
• External mirror

The bits I ordered from AFV Modeller have turned up. I went for the radiator condenser and sand tracks. A bit expensive by the time they landed here in Aussie, but they should add some zing.
