Dungelgrau

Hi Tankers .I went to spray my Initial Tigers wheel assembly's and thought I would try AK interactive Dungelgrau. This out of the bottle is close to black so seems to dark to me. I know that it is actually a grey/black color and not a straight grey as say you would see the color of a Heng Long Tiger 1 out of the box. Any one have some suggestions of a Brand they feel they had a good result from. Regards .

I think Dunkelgrau likely and obviously varied by production lot and weathering. That being so, the choice of model paint depends on individual preference. Hence, within reasonable limits, no few manufacturers' model paint representations of Dunkelgrau and even variations among ones own models are acceptable, perhaps even preferable.

Put tersely: choose a reputable brand you prefer to use and go with it. I have used Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Model Color, Tamiya Acrylic, Mig, AK Interactive, even Vallejo's relatively new Primer, and they all work.

Dunkelgrau from what I've seen of the RAL swatches was a dark Gray almost Charcoal black.

From what I've learned in the modeling world about painting and weathering armor is to go light to dark, and start lighter than you'll want it to end up after all the weathering or it will get so dark that details will get lost.

And Since I will be repainting my first Tiger I Gray, I'll share my plan is to black base prime with the flat automotive dark gray primer that I love then use Tamiya XF-63 German Grey and modulate it with a drop or 2 of white. then I'll be using oils to get some depth. Because I found how helpful using oils was when paininting a monotone color tank.

I look forward to see what others suggest and how yours comes out.

This is AL Interactive’s big spray bomb dunkelgrau out in the real world light. Both are dusted down but it is so superior to the Tamiya shade. Scroll to the last couple of images viewtopic.php?t=37046

A thanks again for the reply's. Panzermechaniker, are you referring to Ak interactive 1027 spray can[Dungelgrau] .I like the look of this and will see if I can purchase here.

A couple of points about Painting German WW2 armour,
German Tanks carried blocks of different colour paint along with rags and brushes,
In the field they would dissolve a block in Petrol then using the rags and brushes paint the tank, As you can imagine variations in paint block colour shades were not unusual but the name of the game was camoufluage so shades of the same colour was actually good news.
And the second point is something that Tom Hugill said some years back when the forum was having this exact same discussion, Paint on the full size prototype will look different on a 1/16 model even if it is from the same tin.
