That is because he was being paraded, wined and dined by the high heid yins, back in Germany.

Many others, ordinary soldiers, and tank crews, also survived lengthy periods on the Eastern Front. Are they also not worthy of medals?

Try reading about Richard Freiherr von Rosen. He Survived the war, and went on to be Panzer-Brigade commander in the Bundeswehr. He used his experience gained, from both the Eastern Front, and Western Front to develop a lot of the modern tactics used to day. This was especially true of the immediate post war threat from Russia and the ensuing Cold War. Arguably a far better Commander.

I dislike random, meaningless statements like “Michael Whittmann of course”. To me it has no context in the discussion. I have not watched any of the episodes so I am unable to understand the statement.

It's the nature of medals/awards, Some get em; some don't.
Politics/ propaganda/ knowing the right people; that's part of it.

A statement may have no meaning to you. That doesn't make it meaningless.

Carius at Malinava. I think it is even more impressive. 2 Tigers went into a Russian Latvian village and took out 17 T-34/85's and JS-2 tanks in 20 minutes. If that had been done on the Western Front he would be even more celebrated and those Soviet tanks were more formidable than the destruction Wittmann wrought as impressive as it was. Carius also believed all the individual kill counts by the aces were pure propaganda. He said he had no idea how many his tank crew took out. In the heat of battle it was almost impossible to be sure of a claim
