Starting to look better already
I am going thru process of painting our personal model currently.
I am using multiple layers of high build primer, then sanding down, bit of work yes.
Then i will put the base colour as red oxide primer once i have surface finish as i intend
I have also decided to start drill out the rivets i designed into the model and use metal rivets....... dont ask why, thought it was a good idea at the time haha
Paint is one of those personal things, but i tend to go looking for interesting schemes and having a go. Maybe get better info from others as im more a mechanical guy rather than painter lol

Hmm... tankme Derek: I still have some of the Tamiya paints, but somehow began using Vallejo some years ago and have been satisfied at lower cost. I will certainly check the video and share it with the Tuesday Make Modeling Mediocre Again gang, as two of five prefer Tamiya paints.

Will WCP RC MODELS: I will be interested to see the redo you have underway. I bet your SdKFz 251 will look better than mine. Will you go with Dunkelgrau? Most of the early 251s were so painted from the factories.

I chose a camouflage scheme today from:
Vallejo, Fernando. 1945 German Colors. AK Interactive. 2012. 42. No ISBN.

Here are three photos of the camouflage as I imitated it. The colors are a little too bright in the photos because I did allow the camera flash. I also will use some AK Interactive or Vallejo dust and then some clear flat to dull the colors a bit more. The colors are RAL 7028, Dunkelgelb, 6011 Olivgrün, 8012 Rotbraun.

A word of caution..........go thru the pain of the tyre(tire) rubber painting sooner rather than later
The front gun shield needs blending in too, lots of components to a 251 that will keep you on your toes like a midget at a urinal !!

Will used a rather convincing compound for the 3D front tires, so no problem with the basic color. I still need to get an MG or two and make a shield, so there is much to go, just as you say. Will sent me some extra goodies, too.
My next step is to reinstall the electronics that worked well before I pulled them out (always a "gulp" moment). Then I have to install front wheels/tires, put E6000 to work on the track pads, install the pads, and test run again.

I still haven't got round to fitting track pads to mine, but somepoint i will, but it works soo well without them fitted i think there is a part of me saying i cant be bothered haha
Maybe i will however for my SD.kfz.10

Will, I used "E6000." The glue is available a lot of places here in the U.S. and through Amazon and eBay. I use E6000 for its durability, breaking strength, and lateral strength (unlike regular CA glues, which have only breaking strength). Early this evening I had all the track shoes on the SdFZ. 251 in fewer than 20 minutes. Type "E6000" in the search box and you'll see how much I use it and how others do, too.

(N.b.: I had to check to see which way tiny cleats on the track pads go in relation to the track links. I'd bet you know already.)
