I will soon get the main gun recoil function working on the this 1/24 Vs M4A3 Sherman. It will consist of 4 wires configured to work with BB gun output circuit connector. Relatively simple upgrade that will not require a custom circuit board. I have developed it using the Vs Tiger 1 and it is working now in that tank and will now be used in the Sherman. I will generate a wiring schematic in this post.

Heng Long 4 LED scoring display added to Sherman and Tiger 1. These Tanks are ready for IR battle! Still got to change that BIG RED MG LED! I was short on LED's at that time but I now have smaller ones that would look less TOY LIKE lol.

Vs Tank M4A3 Sherman converted to HL 2.4g RX-24 -V4 receiver. Next upgrade will be getting the main gun recoil to work. with the RX-24-V4 receiver.

The V1 Transmitter can quickly be identified by the single beep tone it makes when you push the TX on button. The BLACK RX24 V1 receiver is the only one that works with a V1 Transmitter. I bought a set of new Poco Diva Amazon set of 1/30 HL battle tanks and of course the first thing I do with any new Tank is to take it apart and look inside. I was very surprised to see a BLACK RX30 V1 circuit board! So I dug up the 5 V1 boards that I had from ~4 years ago and tried them and they work great with the the new V1 Transmitters that came with the HL 1/30 Tank set.
So in summation..
Black RX-30-24 V1 receiver boards only work with V1 transmitter only (single beep tone with TX on button)
RX-30-24 V2,V3,V4 all work with V2 and up transmitters. Will not work with V1 transmitters. (multitone with TX on button)
I just got a VS Pro 1/24 scale Leopard 2 tank from a thrift store for $5. No remote, but fires right up with fresh batteries. Been over 40 years since I played with my Radio Shack Sherman RC tank, but this one got my attention with it's details, size and heft, and now I want to pair a remote to it and start using it! Looks like you have a lot of experience with VS Pro branded tanks. Are they the same as Heng Long now? Would it be as easy as getting a 1/24 Heng Long remote and I'm off? Or should I look at following your lead in this post and upgrade? Any info/tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The VsTanks can have 2 or more different transmitters that I know of. I do not use the VsTank radio gear as it is overly complicated and outdated IMO and is not fully Digital Proportional. Oh and the battery tray in the VsTanks are useless as well for me as I use Lithium poly batteries. 2s lipo works well with the motors in these tanks. I cut the trays out otherwise there is no room in there for a Li-poly battery. This swap to Heng Long radio gear requires a HL receiver switch as well. You basically gut the VsTank electronics and swap in a HL setup. Requires some experience to do this mod. I have converted 3 Vstanks to HL at this point.
Maybe you can find a VsTank transmitter on ebay. If it is the later 2.4 G radio system, that would be better. Otherwise the are the old 72 mHz radio that uses channel crystals and that can be more difficult to match up.

Left late 2.4g VsT IR battle tank receiver. Middle 72 mHz VsT IR battle tank receiver with rf board and crystal....oh wait ,crystal is missing. I have it somewhere. Right 2.4g HL IR battle tank Tx and receiver. Full DP and compact size. Advanced design. Works very well. May be the best available receiver of its type at this time.

This one is new. Have no use for it. You need the RF board and a crystal before you can use it. Sold separately.

The receiver has to be properly mounted in the chassis and in the right spot. Lots to do in this conversion.

battery tray cut out but enough left for the receiver mount.

This VsTank has HL radio receiver and gearbox. This one was the most challenging.
Since this is my first foray back into RC tanks, I'm leaning towards keeping this simpler and cheaper. But, I also like the 2.4g HL IR battle tank Tx and receiver setup.
I think the short term plan is to find a 2.4 Ghz VST transmitter. Long term, I like the idea of the HL upgrade you suggested. Does it make sense financially to go that route, or should I just get the HL setup and be done with it? IF it's the latter, where is the best place to buy the parts or kit from to make it happen?
I don't mind doing the electronics work. My dad is a retired RCAF F18 Hornet electrician, so I grew up learning how to work on cars and electronics from him on whatever base we were living at. I do a lot of my own wrenching and electrical work now on my truck, Jeep, quad, and every type of motorbike from a Honda Z50 to a Goldwing. Point me in the general direction, and I can usually get the rest of the way from there. That said, I don't mind buying a kit and following a schematic or manual if a plug and play kit exists.
I really appreciate your input, looking forward to getting this Leopard back in the field!
Well Gascan, you certainly have some good skills and experience to do the job. Part of the reward is the accomplishment (in my mind) of doing the upgrades yourself to something that is to your liking. Yes finding a Tx to match your current electronics would be good as you can tinker with that with no fear of "over playing with it" lol. I do that sometimes like play or modify something to the point that the time spent is EXPERIENCE that will benefit the next one as they all get better each time. That in itself is a motivation for me. As far as a Hl setup, I recommend buying a complete new or used 1/24 HL battle tank and use it as a learning tool. They are reasonable in price if you shop around a bit on ebay. Taking them apart and checking things out under the hood is the best way to learn about the electrons plus all the connectors and IR emitters\receivers,scoring system LEDs,motors etc are all there and the board mounting location and wiring routing and such are there as an example of something that is proven to work.
As far as schematics, you will have to do your own. below are some examples.

Taigen Tiger 1 receiver hook up schematic. The Taigen receiver and TX work very good as well amd is a good candidate for upgrading a VsTank.
