Another JagdPanzer IV V/70

Post by Ex_Pat_Tanker »

Thanks to Dave I now have the chassis for my long delayed V/70 build! I will be using Modellino's kit, as I am terrible at scratch building stuff...

The kit comes in 2 parts:

Part 1 is all the parts needed to do the basic build - barrel, mantlet and superstructure resin parts + the superstucture detailing parts like hatches etc. Price is around 120 euro's

Part 2 is the metal parts for upgrading the running gear to a late model Pz4 chassis - new sprockets and idlers, wheel covers, return rollers + the shields for the engine (which should really have been in part 1). Price is 62 euros.

Guess its about time to post about it :D :D

1st Job: cut out the upper hull, Mr Dremel is your friend here...

A little sanding is required to make it fit, and you will need to nibble at the lower hull to get the front sitting right as well.
I'm using mato gearboxes, so I had to cut away the 2 front screw posts and some of the material around the battery box - nothing major, just needs a little clearancing.
If you were to use the HL stug gears, you need to trim away a bit of the gearbox frames.
Image

Next job is to remove the last 3 return rollers, the JP IV only had 3, and the final roller is too high anyway - of course if you want to use side skirts you can skip this step ;)
I recommend a razor saw rather than the stanley knife, as this approach did bend the backs of the roller mounts somewhat 8O

To help hold the rollers on I used a bit of the threaded spacer from a scrap gearbox, along with some of the plate from the frame:

With the threaded post inplace I can now easily mount the rollers and hold them in place while the expoy sets :D
Tip: Use one of the left over roller mounts as a guide for drilling the mounting holes.

Here you can see how I have used the scrap plate from the gearbox. This should give the mount some additional strength.

A quick test fit to see how it all looks:

I'm waiting on a HL recoil and elevation unit, that will pretty much determine how the main gun gets mounted. I have yet to figure out a good method for elevation and traverse that will work with any of the combat systems out there, other than the Tamiya :S - Hopefully I will get it right this time, and I can then finish my other stalled assault gun / Tank destroyer builds :(

In the meantime the glacis plate needs attaching somehow, and some filler is needed around the superstructure to stop the upper hull sagging (maybe I cut too much of the original hull away here :{ ).

Update time :D

I jammed some plasticard into the gap between the superstructure and the engine deck, and then trimmed and filled - no more sag ;)

I put the nose on this morning, a little sanding was needed to get a final fit, but so far I'm pretty pleased with the end result.
