Always love tanks but new to RC and 1/16

Post by TigerMouse1 »

Hi, new guy here to say hello! I am new to RC and 1/16 scale, but not to 1/35 tanks. I had built tank models in my early teen years; and a few here and there over a 50 year span. But never got into RC until my daughter's boyfriend gave me his old Heng Long 1/16 Jagdpather a few months ago. Somehow that tank lighted a fire under me and I quickly bought 2 more! Now I have 3...HL M4A3 Sherman, Taigen Tiger 1 Late, and the HL Jagdpather. I hope to learn more about the hobby here and have fun doing it!

Hello TigerMouse1. You are off to a great start! I started with one RC tank, too. A few days later... Decades later... Well, my friends say that my basement looks like a hobby store.

Whereabouts in the world are you? You need not reveal state secrets, but it does help us recommend reliable places where you might want to get upgrade parts, and more and more and more RC tanks. For example, I am in southern Wisconsin, US, where not too many use or build RC tanks, so 90% of the RC tanks are in my basement and 10% I gave to a friend who uses them to launch BBs at his grandchildren and great-granchildren.

(Of course, such use of the airsoft BBs is ganz verboten. But odd to say, multiple times each year his children bring their offspring across the country to visit.)

Hello Dr. Professor! I live in So Cal, a bit south of Los Angeles along the dreaded 405! (I'm not close to the fires so thank the gods!)

As far as I can tell, there are no local shops near me that carry RC tanks. A few stores for RC cars and planes though. And there is hobby store not far from work that carry a great selection of paint and model kits (and I have been there at least 7 or 8 times in the past 3 months stocking up). At this point, my main online supplier is Motion RC. I bought the Sherman and a few things from them! And there is taigentanks.com. I just ordered a replacement gearbox for the Tiger 1. It was bought used and the zinc alloy gearbox was totally stripped. Thank goodness I didn't pay a lot so it is still a great deal (will tell the story later).

I definitely am looking forward to do a lot of reading here and will need a lot of help when it's time to upgrade!

I lived in Long Beach from '80 to '84, the start of eight years of hard work on a Piled High and Deep. It was disputed territory between Downtown Stoners and West Side Longo, that location and a 1 hour 15 minute daily bus trip to USC a great education in itself for a 30 year old guy.

There are others here on RCTW from around the U.S., including So. Cal. They are far more skilled than am I and quite helpful.

Here in the U.S. one source is Toucan Hobby: https://www.toucanhobby.com/ I was shy of them for years because the listing of parts is a bit difficult to figure out. But I have always found the seller to get the order right and be reasonably fast. I also have used sellers in Germany, the UK, and Asian nations, all with good service, albeit with expensive shipping (it helps to save up multiple items to lower the cost of shipping per item.) If you have questions, fire away!

Well, it's quite a coincidence that I was in that area too in the early '80s! I went to CSULB from '80 to '84; but I didn't live nearby and didn't dorm. I would say I know the areas that a normal college student would know; but not the who's who in the hood stuff! :S Anyway, I still like going to LB to eat at a good Thai or Cambodian restaurant once in a while. Good times!

Welcome! I think there is an RC tank club in the LA area if you are interested in interacting with other tankers...https://www.hobbysquawk.com/forum/rc-ca ... r-jan-11th

Welcome from Ontario, Canada!
So far, none of my sons' girlfriends have given me any tanks. You are doing well!

Hello and welcome from Argyll and Bute. America? Is that not a small island, full of small counties, off the coast of Britain? :D
