Yes, it is rare. Sometimes they show up on ebay for ridiculous prices.

And Tamiya really got their money’s worth out of that recording session at the Musée des Blindés in Saumur - it’s gone into at least four different tanks!
Sheridan might be rarer, but they have a fatal flaw with their tracks, plus no replacement. They came and went very silently.

The next rarest after is probably the panther or the pz iv, which shows up maybe quarterly to half yearly on Japanese auctions. You don't see any pershing for years, and everytime they go out, the bidding goes far beyond what they should be in Japanese auctions.

That's followed by gerpard which isn't as rare as you think. I think tens of thousands sold in the 80s, seems like they appear every month or so. Stalin's fridge is about the same rarity, but I feel it'll eventually get rarer. Jagds trails somewhat after.

Leo 1s are actually very common on Japanese auctions. There's literally 2 up now, and there was 1 last week. Not a great tank. This is followed by kv-1, but I feel the kv-1 will eventually be rarer. It's only more common now as it's not a popular subject.

Everything fridge and rarer is pretty much guaranteed to go up in value.

I follow auctions twice a week on the bay and yahoo.

I shared this list elsewhere in 2021:

Tamiya's tank release dates:

56001 Sherman 105mm - 1974
56002 Leopard A4 - 1977
56003 Flakpanzer Gepard - 1978
56004 King Tiger (Production Turret) - 1981
56005/6 Sherman 105mm - 1998
56007/8 King Tiger (Porsche Turret) - 1999
56009/10/11 Tiger I - 2000
56012 Kubelwagen - 2000
56013/14 Sherman 105mm - 2001
56015/16 M26 Pershing - 2002
56017/18 King Tiger (Production Turret) - 2002
56019/20 Leopard 2A6 - 2004
56021/22 Panther G - 2007
56023/24 Jagdpanther - 2007
56025/26 Pz IV Ausf. J - 2008
56027/28 KV-1 - 2009
56029/30 KV-2 - 2009
56031/32 Super Sherman - 2010
56033 Tiger I (Premium) - 2011
56034/35 JS-2 - 2013
56036/37 Type 10 - 2015
56038/39 Jagdpanzer IV - 2016
56040/41 M1A2 Abrams - 2017
56042/43 M556 Sheridan - 2019
56044/45 Centurion Mk III - 2021

56013/14 was revived in the first quarter of this year as the 50th anniversary model, which honestly wasn’t much more than a couple of box stickers and a photo etch label. But one can see how Tamiya ebbs and flows their 1/16th product line over the years, and this doesn’t include their static 1/16th line that has met some demand for tanks such as the Leopard A4 and the Gepard.

What I never understood is why they discontinnued the kubelwagen. That, with proportional electronics, would sell very good nowadays.

I have a static Sheridan I bought since I couldn't get the full option at the time when I was searching. Even the static version has gone up in price. I bought an entire spare track from Tamiya and it was $89 for ONE. Building that will be a long term project for the far future and I will probably use Louis' build as a reference since he's already done it.

Tracks are still listed as being available for purchase as of today:

https://www.tamiyausa.com/shop/7-digit- ... cks-56043/

And you can buy spare links, but it doesn't say how many are in the order:

https://www.tamiyausa.com/shop/7-digit- ... nks-56043/

Funny part is if you look up spare parts for the Sheridan, the tracks are not listed in the parts. You have to know the part number to find them. Even searching on 56043 (Sheridan RC tank) and "track" will yield no results.

Too many project builds to list...

I’ve only gotten back into this in the last 3 years, but it seems like tanks are sort of the red headed step child of Tamiya’s models. I have a second hand Tamiya King Tiger that was bought in the early 90s. I tried looking for official Tamiya parts to update it but what I needed was always out of stock, so I decided to try to refurb some stuff and replace others with Torro stuff.

Similarly I’ve been trying to get some parts from their Abrams to fancy up my HL Abrams and the brass etch stuff I’ve wanted has been out of stock forever. But I get emails from them about a new car line or static models all the time.

I don’t want cars or shelf warmers, I want tanks!

It’s possibly cheaper and less painful to start over, as those early 90s tanks’ clutch drive boxes are long out of production and no longer supported. Plus, you’ll get a lot more enjoyment out of the full option ones.

Nah, I have a Torro KT that suits me just fine. I enjoy fiddling with the internals of the tanks more than building and painting the exterior of the tanks. It’s just become a fun back burner project at this point to see what I can do to restore/update it on my own with non Tamiya parts.

I have the original clutch box and it still works, for now. Pretty much that and the lower hull and wheels will be the only original Tamiya parts on it when I’m done.
