I think you might have taken the front idler off, and have been trying to get it back on. Instead of taking off the the drive sprockets, adjusting the tension, putting the idler back on and pulling the track over the sprocket. This is the way I do it.
1. Remove rear drive sprocket, and take off track.
2. Leave the inner half of the sprocket in place
3. Take off the idler, and adjust the tension
4. Put the idler back on.
5. Slip the track on over the idlers and road wheels.
6. Pull it over the sprocket. And fit the other half of the sprocket over the track. I will do some photos later.

Instructions. Now with photos. Mine has metal tracks and wheels. The principal will be the same whatever version you have.
1) Turn tank on side and remove the 8 screws from underneath, to release the top. 2) Take out the cap from the rear drive sprocket. And remove the screw. 3) The sprocket should come off, or be able to split in half. 4) Remove the screw from the centre of the idler, and remove along with the track. 5) This gives access to the adjuster. 6) After you have made your adjustments, refit the idler, place the track over the idler, and drape it loosely over road wheels, and return rollers. 7) Fit the drive sprocket in place and pull the track over it. It should be tight, and it will be difficult. Just use a bit of brute force.
Lastly fit the other half of the sprocket and fix in place.

Hi, FORTH time is a charm! I was going at things from the wrong perspective. I had the tank on its side! If you put in on its tracks it is not so hard! In my defense I current have a broken leg. So it is sit or stand for me. No crouching! Once it was at the right hight an I could better see everything it was no problem to sort out. Though the tracks are not adjusted correctly? How much sag should there be at the center of the tracks with tracks of the ground? I have about an inch on both. One I did not touch.
