New here

Post by polish70 »

New member. Been a modeller for 40+ years, mostly aviation, with the odd foray into AFV stuff. Have bought my 11 year old son a heng-long 1/16 Tiger 1 for Christmas and started detailing it with aftermarket stuff and its getting a Dunkelgrau makeover which I'll post in due course!!

Greetings, polish70: with a moniker like that, maybe you are from Poland or Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. :D Someone soon will remind you that few of the Tiger I tanks were Dunkelgrau, but, hey, it's your 11-year-old's. Now your next one, and your next one, and your next one... :haha:

It's a long story but my wife is actually Polish (she has family in Wisconsin though :) ). Yeah, I'm using the excuse of artistic licence tbh as I'm not overly fond of the more common Tiger schemes and the Dunkelgrau option has a lot of scope for using paint modulation on such a big model. I'm actually planning on buying a tank for myself just so my son has someone to have IR battles with.....

"I'm actually planning on buying a tank for myself just so my son has someone to have IR battles with...." Good! When the time comes for you choice of your (first) own tank, we'll be a BIG HELP. :haha:

Me too, I'm really not a fan of the more garish schemes!! If i imagine a German tank, it's always a grey one

I'm torn tbh. Not sure if to stick to WW2 or a more modern opponent like a Merkava or Challenger

Welcome from Ontario!
You're painting it? Didn't you order the grey HL Tiger already resplendent in its dunkelblue grey plastic? ;D ;)

There are many here familiar with R[eady] t[o] R[un] WWII, cold war, and contemporary tanks, so there might be a deluge of advice when the time comes. A toy addict, so bad that for over 20 years I have written monthly farm toy reviews, I will be eager to see the advice and what you choose. By the way, it is said that it took about five Shermans to handle one Tiger 1 (as in the movie "Fury"). You could, then, start with five Shermans.
O.K. I'll shut up.

It pains me to say it, but get a Sherman. I have a dislike of any WW2 stuff, Tigers in particular, there are just too many of them. Mr Chef does seem to have most of them. Shermans are apparently good runners, and a Tiger (yet another) would look silly battling with Challenger or Merkava. The Challenger is definitely not an easy tank for a beginner (even though it is my favourite tank, which I have a love hate relationship) , and I have no experience with the Merkava.
Anyway welcome to the forum from a grumpy, whisky drinking old Scot from Argyll and Bute.
