Saw my first rc tank a couple of days ago and I think I have found a new hobby. Haven't bought one yet, still having too much fun deciding one that I really want. WW 2 era looks like it's got the best selection, but those modern tanks are cool as well!!!! Hahahaha.... Guess that's why everyone seems to have several!
Thanks for all the awesome posts and info out there, it's going to make it a whole lot easier.

Welcome Deusvult. Not too long ago there were not many choices besides WWII armor. But things have changed in the past few years. Some have "a" tank but many of us who enjoy the hobby have more than one. It kind of grows on you...

Deusvult: I live in L.A. from '80 to '84, when I was in my '30s and a Ph.D. student. (it's was called "voluntary improverishment"
). There are some fine choices of modern MBTs, plenty from WWII, and even some cold war AFVs. Here are three of the sellers I have used here in the U.S., in no order of preference:

Of course, there are many sellers in the UK and Europe, especially Germany, but there's no need to go so far for a first tank. Look over these web sites to see if anything catches your fancy. Lots of folks on here can then advise you on the best choice for a balance of quality and cost of the tank you prefer first.
(Ahem...I am not one of the electronics, scratchbuilding, 3D printing wizards here on RCTW, but I sure do have experience buying and repairing.
