The British to my shame easily forget ANZAC Day but we managed to allow troops of the Empire to bravely give their lives to save our sorry backsides.
So to all the members of this forum to whom ANZAC Day really does mean something Thank you.
Some of us do know the price you paid and are grateful for it.
Appreciate the thoughts Mr Jarndice, Im sure its not intentional, the history of things is not very well received these days...........
Today as are all these before & no doubt after, was a solemn event. The various sporting fixtures all conducting commemorations, the Last Post and The Ode being recited............the two nations National Anthems..................we attended a morning remembrance at a local Cenotaph which is always well run and has a more intimate atmosphere to it than larger ones I reckon.
I can admit to there being a lot of onion cutting going on.
There is a very poignant poem read here that in context can sum up a lot of the emotion, despite the fact that my NZ Flag is a bit different, the look and feeling is the same, this really gets me every time I hear it :
Our Flag bears the stars that blaze at night
In our Southern sky of blue
And that little flag in the corner
Thats part of our heritage too.
Its for the English, the Scots, and the Irish
who were sent to the end of the earth
The rogues and the schemers, the doers and the dreamers
Who gave modern Australia its birth
And you who are shouting to change it
you dont seem to understand
Its the flag of our laws and our language,
Not the flag of a far away land.
There are lots of people who'll tell you
that when Europe was plunged into night
That the little old flag in the corner
Was the symbol of freedom and light
It doesn't mean we owe our allegiance
To a forgotten imperial dream
Its the stars to show where we're going
and the old flag to show where we've been.
Its only an old piece of bunting
Its only an old coloured rag,
But there are thousands that died for its honour
And shed their best blood for our flag..................
I had heard of ANZAC Day, but never realized it was held on April 25th (assumed Nov 11 like our Canadian Remembrance Day), until watching Blue Heelers, and they have an episode with ANZAC Day. They mention April, which led me down the google path towards Gallipoli.
Powerful poem, very many thanks for sharing. Sadly the majority of the media seems to want to portray the feelings of those who prefer to ignore our shared history and who want to have nothing more to do with the UK. It is refreshing to hear that there are also those who appreciate what our countries have shared together and who would rather see things remain as they are.
We should all salute our antipodean friends on this day and remind ourselves of their sacrifices that were made for all our freedoms.
Was this the place, Bix? https://www.awm.gov.au/ I remember a participant on Hobby Havoc who I believe was of indigenous heritage and worked somewhere related. I wish he were her on RCTW.
