Re: What type Panthers did the 12th SS use in Normandy please
Waldemar Trojca has a picture of a Command Panther A captioned as HJ so it would be fair to say that there where A’s in the HJ as for a whole company issued with G’s at this time the reasons are A production finished in July 44 and G production started in March 44 though only 2 where built production numbers for both models are as follows
A G
March 269 2
April 205 105
May 133 203
June 120 250
Information is from the Jentz Panther book, as you can see in March and April A production was higher than the G only from May onwards do we see G production surpass the A production so it would be highly unlikely that any Panther unit would consist exclusively of G models at this time.
Panzer Wrecks Vol 1 page 96 and Vol 5 page 25-27 show various pictures from the same incident involving at least 3 knocked out Panther A from 3/SS-Pz.Rgt12 12SS HJ

Re: What type Panthers did the 12th SS use in Normandy please
Hi every one thanks for the help . I have the Panzers in Normandy then and now and I think theres one A in there that they say may be from 12th SS all the rest are early Gs . I agree you would think it highly unlikely that the whole unit was Gs but I havent seen any photos that are defently 12th SS As .
Thanks all Littletankman

Panther G
At this point in the war some divisions didn’t sport divisional emblems which has made identifying units that individual tanks came from difficult, identification is done by camo patterns, turret number and the style of turret numbers most if not all would not show the divisional emblem.
Good luck on this quest but this is where you will become a rivet counter trying to identify individual Panther units, the first forum below is German you will have to trawl your way through this site to find what you are looking for a little German will help.

The book is - "Normandie 6-12 juin 1944 - Les Panzers"
There's more pic's but it's hard to tell if they're A's or D's

Going off the bolt arrangements on the road wheels I would say it’s an A model
